looking at f350 trucks

so tell me guys what to look for on these trucks. I am looking 02 with 7.3 but all are high mileage that I have seen. What is the scoop on 6.0? I heard to stay away from and what about the 6.4. I can't afford anything newer then a 09 if priced right.
I will be pulling a 24 ft enclosed trailer

Thanks for your help
Larry

If I were buying a used F-350 newer than a 2003 and older than a 2011 to tow a 24 foot trailer, I'd look for a gas V-10.

My dealership has an 02 7.3 screw lariat with 29k miles on it. Been drooling on that sucker, but it's $27k. Nothing wrong to me with a 6.4 if you delete it. It is essentially just a larger, "fixed" 6.0 though; same engine layout and general design.

With the difference in price between gas and diesel fuel, the fuel cost of a V-10 would be very close to a diesel when towing. A V-10 gets about 9 mpg towing heavy. A emission-controlled diesel using ULSD would get about 12. This doesn't even start taking into account the higher maintenance costs of a diesel.

If you are getting a F-350 for a daily driver, you are going to be spending a small fortune on gas/fuel and maintenance anyway.

How much does this 24 foot trailer weigh fully loaded and will you be towing in the mountains at high altitude?

Coy, an Ecoboost towing heavy doesn't get any better gas mileage than a V-10.

Just scroll down the page for beating the powerstroke horse to death on what to buy.

More dog in front with a superduty to handle a wagging tail in an emergency.

^ Hey I remember that thread. Haha

OP, if you want something to pull, get into diesel. Period. A lot of my points are brought up in that thread above. If you need more info, message me or head over to powerstroke.org. Tons of info there.

Oh and "higher maintenance cost"?

My truck cost me $71 for an oil change every 5000 miles, and $49 for fuel filters every 10,000 miles.

So is that worth me pulling a 9k pound trailer down the interstate getting 13-14 MPG? Damn right it is. It's nice being able to get up to speed and being able to pull through the hills without shifting on every damn hill. Throw it in gear and roll.

Get a 2006-2007 6.0 Powerstroke. You can pick them up cheap really clean. Major problems were cleared up these years. The 6.0s are quicker and more powerful than the 7.3s and a lot cheaper to fix/maintain than the 6.4s. Type in Powerstroke Help on YouTube. That guy knows everything there is to know about Powerstroke engines. I've seen 6.0 tow trucks with over 300,000 miles on them. They are not as bad as people make them out to be. It is a European designed engine, designed to run on CLEANER European diesel. American diesel has more contaminates in it which causes problems in these engines, especially the VGT turbo. You could buy a 6.0 and do the bulletproof that the guy on YouTube recommends for less than you could buy a 6.4 liter. The 6.4 has many problems of its own with the emissions controls.

I agree the 06-07 trucks are better, but EGR still needs to be deleted because it WILL fail some day. My .02

But yes, 6.0 runs a lot better than a 7.3.

If it has an EGR, it needs to come off, whether 6.0, 6.4, or 6.7. It's not even about it failing for me, which it will, but it's detrimental to the engine and shortens its life. There's no way around that, it's fact.
