2001 crew cab...need advice
I have been looking at another truck at my dealer. (2001 )
F-250 Crew cab xlt 4x4.It has everything I would order except I don't know about the motor , rear end ratio combo.
Here it is 4.10 l.s with a 5.4 l v-8.
I would be putting larger tire's on like 33's so I'm ok with the 4.10 ratio. But not sure about the v-8's power to move such a beast.
I do moderate towing not more than 4000 lbs. & I would probably hang a blade on the front for winter plowing.
I like the PSD but the x-tra money I can't seem to justfy.
I heard the v-10 which is ok suck's major fuel. That's not ok.
I have a 5.4l in my screw w/3.55 l.s. & it work's great but it's much lighter than the F-250 crew cab.
Please give me some input on this set up if you could.

Hey Fallscrew,
I did the same thing your looking at, I traded my SCrew for a F-250 Crew Cab last night, and should be picking it up today. I spent alot of time looking at what engine I wanted and finally settlted on the V-10. After superchiping my SCrew I was only getting 14 to 15 mpg out of my 4.6L, so I don't think the V-10 will be too much lower, maybe 12 to 13 mpg. I couldn't justify the diesel as well, although it sure is a nice engine in a great truck. For the extra cost I think the V-10 is a good alternative to the PSD. It seems to me that the 5.4 in such a heavy truck is not the right choice, I wouldn't be happy, so that's why I chose the V-10. The 5.4 motor is easy to find in my area, but the V-10 requires some searching. Good luck in what you decide. Check out Ford-Diesel gas engine forum for lots of good info.

Well... I agonized over the same choice. For various reasons I chose the v8 (and the worried that I made the wrong choice until I got the truck).
I've now had it since February and have a little over 7k miles on it. I have not had ANY worries about power from that truck for even a second.
First -- I'm pleased that I got the 4.10LS. I've managed the bark the tires a few times (by accident, of course). And I tend to do fine WOT out of a toll booth, for example.
Now... I haven't pulled anything with it yet (since I haven't had occasion to); but I have managed to load it down a few times and have noticed no decrease in mileage or power. Honestly, I'm surprised (pleasantly so)! Also cannot speak to plowing with it (but I doubt you'd see a big penalty).
Sometimes I still wonder about the v10 -- but that's more from a personal ego. Basically, I have one of the biggest trucks on the road... sometimes I worry that I "only" have a 330ci engine. It's not grounded (for me) in actual performance... just mainly the discussions on this board, really
I might have been happier... who knows. Lately, I've been thinking the next one will be the diesel, since I like the sound, power and I drive this a lot. But I digress...
I find that my mileage as been decent. I consistently get 12-13 mixed and about 15 highway (I tend to drive a little quick, still). When I take my time on the highway, I've observed 16 and 17 once. I don't think that's terribly different from many of the people with the V10s.
There are a slew of modifications and aftermarket accessories for both engines; if power really becomes an issue (either engine), there is a cure. Lots of them actually
I can honestly tell you that I would order this combo again without worrying for a second. At the same time, my next truck is probably a PSD (either the 7.3, or I'm waiting to see what the 6.0L pans out to be like).
Hope this helps. If not, feel free to contact me either through the forum or by email and I will happily provide you with more details.

I have that truck!! See sig. I have no conserns w/ power, even w/ 33" tires. Yes the V10 would be better on power and the stroker would be even better than the V10. However both cost more, and the stroker alot more. I get about 13-15 MPG. Being a Master tech (for FORD) I knew what I was getting!!
Get what you want it is your choice and your truck. Whatever combo you get, I can asure you that you will love it...

Big Block Engine
In 1992 I bought a F250HD with the 460 CI. Pulled a trailer all over the country and enjoyed the time. Finally sold the trailer (5vr) and got a smaller unit. Made the big mistake of selling off my big block. In my opinion the 460CI is the best and most reliable towing engine ever made. Since then I have gone thru V6's small V8's trying to get the performance of my 460 but just couldn't. Finally broke down and went and got me a 2001 F250 SD CC V10 4x4. Just got back from Alaska, California, and 11,000 mile trip and absolutely no power problems at all. Slowest mountain speed was Eisenhower pass in Colorado 11,170 feet. I got down to 39mph and the control kicked into 2nd and I went up it a 50mph. I also own a 5.4L Expedition, it feels a lot faster than the 6.8L but does not compare in power at all.
If I ever get rid of this big block again, please someone kick me right in the A$$$. That's my opinion get the big block, you won't regret it.

PS: Towed a 7000lb Jayco Eagle the entire way.

We were set to get the F250 Crew 4x4 V8 - every dealer we spoke with thought we were crazy to go with the V8 in such a big truck. No one had one on their lot. We finally found one and test drove the V8 with 4.10LS - high rev - drove very nice, not sluggish at all. Compared it with the PSD - too noisy! Then the V10..ahhh power, speed, quiet ride...- needless to say we went with the V10 3.73LS. We tow a 3,300 trailer - load it up and have a ball!
I don't understand why everyone says the V10 guzzles gas - in our experience - it is only 2-3 diff than the similarly configured V8 or PSD's. MPG has been about what we expected - the truck is for trips mainly- always towing: with 3k on it we get around 11-13 mpg. A friend's PSD dually is 9-11 (camper aboard), about 15 w/out.
I am happy with the V10 - but the V8 w/4.10's would have been fine - the main reason we went V10 was to serve our needs longer.

I know if I ever to decide to step up to a F250 or F350 I'll do my best to get a V10 over the V8 for the power and speed the V10 has over the V8 but for now the 4.6 in my F150 is doing just fine for me now.
