Power Steering Whine

I just traded my dog 5.4 truck in for a 2000 Crew Cab 2 Wheel Drive Short Bed last week. I started to notice a power steering pump whine. My question is, has anyone here ever experienced a power steering whine and how was it corrected?? Please let me know. Thanks. Bugman.

I haven't had that problem but I've heard of others having it. Have you checked the pump and the hoses to it for any leaks?? And check to see if you may need more fluid in the pump. If you have any warrenty, take it in to Ford (after you check the fluid level) Let us know if you find any leaks, If you do, I've heard of an additive that you can add to fix it. (I'll just need to do some research to find it)

work up a sig so we can tell what your new truck is like Don't you just love the room in the back seat of those Crew Cabs, my kids don't kick the back of my seat anymore.

Hi Tina,
Thanks for responding. This is my first truck with a diesel engine so, I'm keeping an eye on everything. I did check the fluid level as well, as for any leaks and found none. The fluid level was fine. I may bring it into the dealer to have them check it out. I will let you know what they find out. Oh, by the way, how hard it is to change the fuel filter? and how often do you drain the fuel-water separator? Thanks. Bugman.

Changing the fuel filter isn't too difficult, I need a ladder (I'm 5'1") I believe there's a cover over it that needs to come off. Don't buy your filters from ford, they charge WAY too much. I get mine from an International dealer here in town but over on the diesel board, they have a sponser that sells them even cheaper if you buy in bulk!! I do like to keep a spare in the truck and once you figure out what tools you'll need, keep them in the truck too. Reason being, if you ever get any crappy fuel, you will need to change that filter. And you changing it vs calling a tow truck is a whole lot cheaper and quicker. Other than getting bad fuel and needing to change the filter right then, you will only be changing it every 15k miles. My husband does my oil changes and I think he may be draining the water in fuel thingy occasionally when he's under the truck. I know he hasn't done it too many times, like maybe once!!! Do check out the diesel board www.ford-diesel.com Quite a difference going from an F150 to an F250, huh?? I too used to have a 97 F150 With my F150, I found a parking space in the boonies, with the F250 I take about 3 spaces in the boonies plus have to make sure I have enough turning room to manuver that beast.

Tina,
Thanks for the information. I still cannot get over the amount of power that the diesel has. In my old F-250, I always had to turn the A/C off to get up some of these hills in Jersey. The fuel mileage is about twice the amount that I used to get with my 5.4 Engine. Anyway, I will let you know about the power steering whine. Thanks Again. Bugman.

Speaking of power As much as the diesel has, I still wanted MORE!!! I talked with Mike T. here and got all the info I could stand on the Superchip. I tow a fairly large trailer and wanted a chip that I could use while towing. You know, just to give that beast a little extra umph while going up hills (hills, mountains, passing dodges) one of the best parts was finding out that unlike the chip for the F150, where I had to burn the expensive premium gas, diesel is diesel. Extra power and no extra fuel $$ dollars to get it. There's also some other "improvements" that help that beast. One that I really like is the turbo brake. It's an electronic brake, kind of like a jake brake. see this site www.westerndiesel.com Have you found out anything about your whine yet??? Some of the people that had it, said it went away after some miles were put on. Some had to add fluid to the pump and some had to have a new pump. Just make sure it's really the pump that you're hearing and Not the turbo!!!

Tina---you didn't try to build one of the $20 exhaust brakes first before buying????

You drive a 6-speed---what a girl!!!!

I have the $20 exhaust brake that works good....

The P/s noise is air-e-ation of the steering fluid...
Synthetics will decrease this noise...

All Ford P/s make this noise....

All I can say is Propane rocks!!!!!!!!!!Its like driving a mustang it wants to go!!!!!!

Mach1: hey, my turbo brake was even cheaper than $20!!! I won it last year at the Diesel rally in Florida!!! Never won anything in my life and they pull my name out of the hat. They even installed it for free!! Thing is, I thought it was mainly for towing but I tend to use it around town for stop and go traffic. The thing works beautifully causing me not to use the "real" brakes that much.
6speed, only way to drive!!! After I got the clutch broke in or my left leg developed more muscle, it's really easy to drive. Lots of fun. I pull a 30' travel trailer too!!! I'm just learning how to back that up but I don't think I'm doing to bad with it. Haven't hit anything!! Pulling it is a piece of cake!

Mach 1,
How well does the synthetic fluid reduce the power steering noise?? My 2000 Auto. two wheel drive crew cab gets twenty miles per gallon compared to my old 1999 F-250 two wheel drive that got eight miles per gallon. I see from your signature that you have a 1969 Mustang. I have a 1968 GT Fastback. Bugman.

Bug---the noise that I hear from the SCrew P/S is aeriation of the ps fluid...Synthetic will quite it noticablely...It will not stop it completely, but then again I haven't found a cure....worth doing to reduce wear and better mileage..

Mustangs rule...I want to do a major restoration...Its setup for slot car(autocrossing)..cant wait to get into that Cleveland...

mine is the 69 Mach1 four headlites and the widest biggest mustang.. love it...
