V-10 Gas mileage

V-10 Gas mileage
I'm thinking of upgrading from my 1994 F-150 to a F-250 SD crew cab 4x4 with a V-10 and an automatic. I plan on lifting it and running 36's. What gear ratio should I run and what kind of gas mileage can I expect. I occasionally pull 7000 lbs. worth of horses. Thanks in advance,

Not having a V10, I can only tell you what other's have said about it. Yes, it's a gas hog. And with you wanting to add a lift and larger tires, it's gonna be even worse. But it's also known as a good working truck, so you'll have plenty of power to turn those tires. Since your only pulling the horses occasionally then I wont suggest you get the PSD. One thing, I'm guessing you mean Crew Cab when you said supercrew. (The supercrew is an F150) I've got 3.73 limited slip in my truck, no complaints. I believe with the V10 you can also get 4.30 and you may have to go with that to get the higher rated GCWR. My book is last years and it's saying that with the 3.73 that the GCWR is only 17000 with a max loaded trailer of 10400. The figures for the 4.30 is 20000 GCWR and max loaded trailer of 13400. (auto, 4x4 CC F250) If that 7k lbs of horses doesn't include the trailer then you maybe should look into the 4.30 gears. Hopefully you will find a couple to test drive and see for yourself which pulls better.

Well, if you go with the 4.30's and change your tires to the 36's your new ratio will be around 3.55. Your truck is now only rated to tow less than a V10 with the 3.73's. To get back to stock you'd need something like 4.91 gears. I wouldn't go any taller than 33's if you still want power to tow. The mpg will prolly be in the 10's city with the big tires and 4x4 option. What ever you do recalabrate the speedo.
