2008 V10 or 6.4 Diesel

Hi everyone! I'm new in here.

Yes, an other debate on the V10 or 6.4. I've search on the internet, but nothing seems to fits my needs. Anyways, I want to change my F-150 for a F-250, want something bigger. I'm looking for the 2008 model. But I don't know witch engine to choose. Looking for a bit more power than my tiny 4.6 V8.

My needs:

-I don't tow a lot. Sometime I tow a boat or a car.
-Maintenance cost and reliability. Money is not an issues, but you know....
-Something with a ''good'' mileage, I do about 60miles or more everyday to go to work.
-I work as a Diesel mechanic but on Big truck. So I have a bit of knowledge on diesel engine.

I'm listening to you and I'm also very open to other suggestion! Thanks!

The V10's are real thirsty. My 2012 F550 is the V10.

The late 2008's came with the much improved 5.4 3v. It's always an option and my first choice if it's just a shopping trolley.

What big trucks do you work on fella? 300 ton+ ?

You have the option of the V10 until 2010. After that, its replace by the V8 6.2l. Well that's what wiki says.

Yeah! The option still available only on the F-450, F-550 on the 2010 and + models.

I work in a Freightliner and Western Star truck dealer. I'm use to work on Cumming, Caterpillar et Detroit Diesel engine.

Ah that would explain the pre 2010 thingy.

Whats the demand for diesel mechs in your area? I work as a HD mech openpit mining and they cannot get guys for love nor money.

I spent years working for CAT all over the world. Love a good *****-pillar

Well the demand for mechs in there. But the demand for GOOD mechanics is a whole different thing. They are hard to find these days.

Never touch that kind of machinery. Looks cool!

Lots more expensive maintenance on the 6.4L than a gasser. I would only recommend a 6.4L if you are able to get around yer states emissions laws and run a DPF delete with a tuner.

1600deg EGT's through the heads, both turbos, and out the exhaust with expensive raw fuel making the mileage drop like a stone doesn't make this the best possible option.

I live in Canada. So I don't think there will be any problem if i take off the DPF. Hey! And who gonna look under the truck see if it's there?!

For your use, the ONLY downside to the V-10 is gas mileage. Back and forth to work, I would expect about 12 miles per US gallon - that's about 20 liters per 100 km. Without extensive mods, I'd guess a stock 6.4 diesel would get about 16 mpg - with mods it could probably get close to 20.

The diesel does have more power, especially at high altitudes, but the V-10 is no slouch - it has a bunch of low end torque.

A modded 6.4 could probably last longer than a V-10, but periodic maintenance is costlier - oil capacity, filters, etc. They also can be a PITA in extreme cold weather, you gotta keep them plugged in.

The 5.4 3V is a viable option for a DD, but the gas mileage won't be that much better - probably 14? It should have more power than a 04+ F-150 with a 4.6 2V.

I see. Everything show me that the 6.4 is the way to go. The only really advantage that the V10 got is the price. It's cheaper than the diesel when it comes to buy a truck.

Stock 6.4L towing I'd get 8 with a regen. 14ish otherwise. Now I'm 16 towing, 18 hot roddin', and 20 if I'm easy with the boost.

my dad has a 2009 5.4 4 door 4x4 and his average read out reads 12.3MPG and i know a guy who has the same truck in a 6.8 and his says 11.8 and he drives it harder than my dad does. i would get the v10 because of the power and basically the same MPG as the 5.4

I had a 2008 6.4L that sucked fuel at 13mpg on a good day. I now
have a 2010 6.4L and I pull 16 average with no highway. A world of difference. I hit 18 to 20 if i hit the interstate and keep it under 65 for short runs. I doubt ill get 19-20 on an extended interstate trip, but pulling 7k, it kicks butt and I get about 13. I'd love to delete, but cant see the benefit with the mileage im getting.
