F250 newb with quick question
Hey guys I'm possibly in the market for a 250. Saw a pretty good deal on an 06 KR with with 92k on it. The dealer claims it has egr delete and studded heads. Is there an easy way to make sure it really does, and not just take his word for it? Any tell tale signs? Pictures are worth a thousand words, so if you have them of what it should look like even better. Thanks for your time.
The EGR delete is pretty easy because there should plate where the EGR valve is on the intake manifold and I will try and remember to take a picture of mine at lunch and post it later. The studs are a little harder to determine just because they are all under the valve cover and the valve cover needs to be removed in order to confirm that the engine is actually studded. Now with that said my 06 has the original head bolts and gaskets with 175,000 miles on the clock my truck has had a tune in it for most of 2011 with no signs of head gasket failure. My truck has seen 32lbs of boost towing our 5er with a turbo boot clamp that let go pulling a pretty decent grade.
Thats what I was afraid of with the head studs. Thanks a lot man. How has your truck held up with 175k miles? I've seen these diesels go for crazy amounts in my searching, which is definitely a good sign. The only apprehension I have is I've never owned or worked on a diesel before. I know there are similarities with a gas engine, but also a lot of differences. I guess there was a time I didn't know jack about gas engines too though right? Thanks again.
No problem, I asked all the same questions when I was looking for mine. Those are the two biggest problems that the 6.0 has but you should also be aware of injector failures, FICM(likes to die at or around 100k), and the oil cooler should have been rebuilt when they deleted the EGR and EGR cooler and if it wasn't you may want to look at having it done if you buy the truck. If you buy the truck make sure you stay up on the PM's and change the oil at 5000 miles or not to much past that because the 6.0 uses high pressure engine oil to fire the fuel injectors and the HPOP pressures run around 25,000 to 30,000 PSI so it takes a toll on the motor oil. If you can change the oil and fuel filters your self to save some cash because to have mine done at the dealer used to cost me $125 for an oil change and $210 for fuel filters and oil change.
If the truck you are looking at has any type of cold air intake on it walk away from it because the aftermarket CAI or high performance air filters don't filter out fine dust well and it will ruin (dust) the turbo which is about a $1500 item. The stock intake is good until you break the 500hp barrier so if it's still on the truck leave it alone and change the filter when needed I have had my truck for 3 years and I think I've changed the filter once but my trucks a certified pavement queen. If it's been tuned or has a tune in it there should be gauges that accompany the tune EGT(exhaust gas temp), boost, trans temp, are the most common and most necessary for a slightly modified truck. If the truck has a tune in it and has no gauges walk away and keep looking because you can cook an engine pretty quick with a hot tune and no way to monitor the EGT's (anything over 1100* for long periods of time are bad).

Hey Dave, I don't mean to let a 7.3 guy school a 6.0 guy... BUT.....
It is very, very, very, (did I mention very?) easy to tell if a 6.0 has studs or not.
Look at the passenger side of the motor, on the front of the head. Near the valve cover. Million dollar question is, do you see a big black bolt head, or a stud with a nut on it?

High pressure oil pumps on 6.0s top out at about 3500 psi oil pressure... Not 25-30,000. 6.4s use a high pressure fuel and run a max of 25-30,000 psi. And on a 6.0 5 head bolts are under the valve cover and 5 on the outside directly below the valve cover.

Thanks guys for so much great info. I have another question kinda off the topic but don't want to create a new thread. What do you think of the v10? I really want a 250 for towing my boat and toy hauler. I'm sure the diesel would be better suited for this, I just trust myself a lot more with a gas engine. I found an 08 with 75k v10 for about the same price as the KR. Thanks again, and thanks for the pictures bnehila, much easier to know what to look for when I've seen it already.

Anyone want toast with their eggs???
The V-10 can tow just about anything a diesel can and will have a lot lower maintenance cost. The gas mileage will totally suck but that will be compensated for by the considerably cheaper 87 octane gas. The 08 should be a 3 valve, which has a ton of HP and torque. The only place where a diesel will tow remarkably better would be at high altitudes, because of the turbo.
Expect about 12 mpg as a daily driver and about 9 mpg towing.

You guys were more help than you'll ever know. I drove 2 hours to go look at the KR who the used dealer insisted had both the egr delete and studded heads. The truck didn't have EITHER! Then the dealer acted like I didn't know what I was talking about until I started to point out what it should look like, and what was missing. He then started to subtract from his asking price and add to my trade in price, but no deal. If he continues to lie about stuff I can point out, how can I trust him on things wrong that I can't see? I think I'm going to start looking at v10s, or just keep my 150 awhile longer. Anyway, thank you again for helping me out, I could have ended up in a money pit.
