2003 Powerstroke--white smoke

Posting this for a friend whos looking at a 2003 KR Diesel.

Owner had the following posted:
"Here's the deal with the truck, last night I was in a car wash getting all the salt and stuff off when it just started pouring out white smoke. The truck didn't really lose power or anything or really start idling rough just poured out the smoke. I spoke with my mechanic this morning and he feels like the EGR is bad."

Having posted the above, if we do the egr delete will the truck be ok, or at this point something else is wrong? Any other reason why it would be pouring out white smoke? Also is it ok to drive like that or should it be towed.

As for mods:
MBRP cat back exhaust, stage 2 cold air intake, and I have an SCT tuner that has not been run on the truck yet.

Any input/suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

blue smoke is oil if i remember right, and i think coolant will be white, but not certain. i doubt he blew a head gasket, but being an '03 with the 6.0 they had head problems, ask him if it had the head bolts replaced, that could be the problem, not sure though, the EGR delete shouldn't hurt it anyways.

Head bolts are stock.

A few members on the other site mentioned the EGR wasn't as big of a problem on the 03. They mentioned more likely the Injector/s are bad. They mentioned the injector/s were probably stuck open and causing over fueling.

If I recall the 03's had the 7.3 or the 6.0. Which does he have?
From what I've seen in the past with 6.0's white smoke is coolant. The EGR could have busted. Most do an EGR delete to omit the issue from occurring. Head gaskets usually blow due to running a programmer or custom tune with out changing factory head studs.

the early '03's were 7.3's and i think in the middle of the production year they switched to the 6.0's thus the mix of '03 6.0's and 7.3's

If it's a 6.0, tell him not to touch it with a 10 foot pole.

Yea its the 6.0 KR.

No idea if he was power washing the engine.

I think my buddy ended up passing on the truck. I shared the info from here and another forum.

From what I was told and read, the 03 6.0 usually have stuck open injectors which causes over fueling and that causes the white smoke to poor.

Thanks everyone.

Not a hater, just stating a FACT that the 6.0 is NOT a reliable engine, especially the early ones. I'm glad that you are happy with yours, but the engine in general is a piece of crap.

It says something when Ford sues Navistar to try to recoup warranty costs...................

partially messing around with ya but i also agree. its not the best or most reliable engine but its problems now that they are know can easily be managed for most. still some bad eggs out there yes. part of the warranty claims issue in the beginning was they switch to the 6.0 and they started coming into the shop and ford had yet to produce a service manual and the techs were often time left to just try and figure it out based on their knowledge and 7.3 stuff but the addition of the egr system really changed things.

i just think its funny when people say they would never ever buy one and their only reason often times is they read comments like yours or other ones online. (not singling you out glc) theres just alot of people whos 6.0 education comes from the wrong place and are very uneducated on them.
