My Early 99 7.3 PSD seems much louder than most others I hve heard. It runs great but is just loud. I dont mind and like the sound of a strong diesel and its even louder than my dads 1997 cummins which is super loud.

Anyway the engine has high miles at 153,000 so is the sound a sign of age?

 

Hpop might be getting weak, injectors might need to be freshened up, exhaust manifolds could be cracked, up pipe donuts might be shot, air in the fuel, or could be torque converter rattle if its an auto (sounds like marbles in a can that goes away just off idle).

 

Have you looked at the exhaust to see if it has rusted out and has holes in it? Rust can eat through the pipe and totaly seperate them, and if it is before the muffler, then it is gonna be very loud.

 

They're just plain loud. Do you have another 7.3 of a similar year to compare it to?

 

Whats loud? The knock? The tick? They're definitely a loud motor under normal conditions it could be nothing.

 

Do you think your fan is stuck on?

You have to define loud. Also, isnt 99 single shots?

 

99s are split shots. The single shots went out with the 97 PSDs, though 97 PSDs from CA were also split shots.
