Lift Kit Question

Ok heres the deal:
Bro has an 04 F350 6.0 FX4 Screw with a 4 inch pro comp lift and 35's

right now his 4x4 is not in working order because it was missing the driveshaft when he bought it (he bought it with an 8 inch lift then dropped down to a 4 inch). he went to put one in and somebody told him he had to have an extension on it to work with the 8 inch lift.

Now hes thinking of dropping it again to a 2 inch lift.

question is does any of this sound right? and is it possible to run a stock driveshaft with a 2 or 4 inch lift?

also excuse me if any of this sounds dumb im not 100% sure on all of this being right. thats just the story he told me and what to ask you guys.

I have an 8" lift with the stock driveshaft. I've seen trucks with 12"+ kits running the stock drive shaft.
