How long will they last ??

I know there is no EXACT answer to this, but several opinions are better than nothing. I'm looking to buy a 2006-2010 F250 or F350 diesel for limited driving - camper, boat, hauling junk.

Assuming the truck has had average maintenance, how high would you go on mileage and still expect to get 10,000 to 20,000 more miles on it.

Thanks for any (and all) answers.

My truck has 162k on it and going strong and I would expect with good maintenance practices I could probably get to 300-400k on the truck but the newer trucks do not take well to sitting for extended periods of time with the VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) because the vanes will rust in place. If you are not going to use it all the time I would look for a nice clean 7.3 OBS or Super Duty they are rare and getting harder to find but they are out there if you are paitent and will to pay what some one is asking for one.

You may be a lot better off looking for a V-10 gasser. For that kind of service, you don't need a diesel and its higher maintenance costs.

I agree, v10 or 5.4 would be the better choice for what you want to do.

Yes, even a 5.4 will do the job. However, it's underpowered in a Super Duty and doesn't get decent gas mileage. You can probably get a good deal on one though.

Even if it was a 250k+ motor in an ideal world, that is when the normal truck things on a gasser start to fail.

Good friend of mine has a 7.3L nearing a half mil on the odometer, but fixin everything else is nickle and dimin' him to death.

If you're only wanting to get 10-20K out of a truck before it dies, then 400-500K miles (if you can even find them that high) would be the ticket.
