Need F250 advice quickly

Good morning guys. I sold my 2001 F150 SCREW 4x4 a few weeks ago. In it's place I bought a truck that has a vibration problem and is going back to the dealer today.

So...last night I found a 2008 F250 super crew Lariat 4x4 with 48k miles on it for $36,000. The truck has a 6.4L diesel and is in great looking condition...no blemishes visuall.

I had been looking at trucks with much lower miles on them...should I be concerned by the 50k miles on this truck? How many miles to these engines get to before they start having "typical" problems? I really don't want to spend a bunch of money then start to have problems when I get to 90k miles.

I will be truckless by this evening and need to buy another quickly.

Thanks in advance.

It'll have a 100K warranty on the motor, so you'll have plenty of time to figure out if it'll be a problem child or not. The 6.4s are solid motors though.

Freeky just got 17 MPG on a road trip... Which I'm fairly certain is about 7 MPG better than your Expedition gets...

I must have had a tailwind on that trip to Florida. I got over 17MPG on the way down there. On the way back, I averaged about 14MPG. Maybe it was the diesel that I got in Florida for the drive back, but I definitely didn't see the same mileage. That truck has gremlins, i think.

I can tell you from personal experience that the 6.4L can get ok mileage while not being worked hard, but put it under any load at all and the economy drops. Just rolling hills and a slight head wind is enough to knock off 5-6 mpg. The only way I've heard of people getting better than crappy mileage with that engine is to delete all the emissions stuff, but then your warranty goes out the window.

Firezapper I know has seen similar mileage on his 08. He can get 17-18mpg, but once you drive it hard or hit a head wind it'll drop down to close to 14. The 08 F550 we have at work runs about 8mpg unloaded and goes down to 6mpg loaded to 26k GCW. Some guys have said they saw 10mpg putzing down the road at 55mph, but I never have. Though we never have had the 6.4L in the shop for repairs if that says anything.

Oh, and $36k for a 2 year old truck with 50k miles on it is insane. If you're even considering that truck I could make you a SMOKIN deal on an F250 with a 7.3L that won't be a fuel hog, only $20k. I'd expect to pay that kind of money for a NEW F250 only. That truck with that mileage is 27-28k TOPS.

By no means is $36,000 insane for a 08 F-250 crew cab 4x4 Lariat. If it was a xlt than $36,000 would be too much. I would try to talk them down from 36k. As long as you like the truck and are happy with the deal...get the truck.

Yeah, $36k is too much for a 2 year old truck with 50k on it no matter who makes it. The value of used diesel trucks is so over inflated right now its funny.

For example I've been looking at Dodges lately and I can buy a 2007-2008 truck for around $32-36k depending on how its equipped. Most trucks were 36k-50k on mileage. I could buy a brand new late 2009 truck on the lot for $35k equipped similarly to most used ones I found. I see people putting up their old diesels with over 200k on them and still wanting over $15k for the truck

If I was the OP I'd suggest taking a look at a new truck if you really want a new diesel. You could make out really well if you can find an 09 still on the lot because the dealer will want it gone.

It is funny how well the diesel market is doing right now. People are buying trucks just like the one CD1 is looking at everyday for that same price. As long as people are buying them the market isn't going to change that much. Back when diesel was $4 a gallon...a truck like that would be about 7 grand less because nobody was buying them.

As for buying a new 09 you would have a VERY hard time finding a F-250 4x4 crewcab. Your best bet is find a nice used 08 or 09 diesel like you want. That will keep you in the mid to high 30k range.

You won't buy a new Lariat Screw 4x4 diesel for anywhere near $35k. The sticker on those trucks is over $50k.

Mine is an FX4 and MSRP was $50k. With only 14k miles on my truck, I suspect that it's still worth $36k.

Well maybe the Ford side of things really is doing that well. I know on the Dodge trucks I was looking at, a 2009 2500 Ram had an MSRP of around $46k. When it was all said and done, between rebates, employee purchase program (I think that knocked off a whole $700), and the fact it was an 09 and the 10s were coming onto the lot it would have been $35k. I didn't take it because I couldn't work a deal with the trade value of my truck and the interest rate.

I did ask on the 2010s and priced out a 3500 dually which did sticker for $52k. Since it was a fresh redesign of the truck and they were brand new the dealers weren't moving off the price any, so that one would have been near $50k when it was all said and done.

Though even still after 2 years and 50k miles, the truck should depreciate down to near 50%. Either that or I'm still used to getting raked over the coals on ag equipment depreciation. More or less it comes down to the market demanding trucks like this, and dealers recognize this and raise their prices accordingly. I'm kind of hoping that diesel prices spike back up to $4-5/gal for awhile. Then maybe it'll deflate this market and I can pick up a decent dually without buying new. Hmm........maybe I need to look into selling my truck now. Should be worth $15-17k.
