thinking about a diesel

okay, i know this might be a well asked question,
but would a diesel be a good truck for me...
back home i towed my racecar, and my bed loaded
car weighed 3,250lbs after a race night, around 3,350-3,400lbs i would put normally around 6-8 spare tires in my bed, i had a 18 foot trailer with a 2 foot dove tail on it, and some times i would put my 4-wheeler on the trailer also.. i would tow that package every friday this summer around 50-100 miles a weekend, the year before i would town the same, but i had to haul two cars, (and the shop was further away) my truck now that i have moved just doesn't seem right to me.. but anyways. i want to try to find a race team up here, and start towing a car again, the cars i am looking at will have a 3,400lbs min on them. plus i would like to find a enclosed trailer. i currently have a 01 f-150 screw with the 5.4l. it now has around 121,700 miles on it, started towing with it around 85,000..
do yall a diesel would be a good choice for me to look into, if i were to get a newer truck soon.. (i would prefer a 6.0l 4-door, 4 wheel drive)

Thanks
Steven

Keep the F-150 going a bit longer and look at the 2011 Super Dutys when they come out.

The 6.0 just wasn't that reliable, and the 6.4 isn't much better. They tow like beasts but they are high maintenance and don't get all that good fuel mileage.

If you can find an old clean 7.3, jump on it.

Diesels are great. I have one a 7.3. Been a great truck an tow with it every day. Yeh the 6.0s have had there issues but the 6.4s have been very relaible. I tow with mine all the time it handles loads with ease. I wouldnt want to haul with anything but a superduty. IMO nobody has come close to building a truck like it.Ford blows them all away. Yeh I think you need a superduty to haul around that race car off yours.

BTW do you have a pic off your race car. Love that sport. How did you do last year? Good Luck on the coming season.

i absolutely love my 06 and wouldnt go back to my 150, that being said i would hold off with your 150 for now till the 2012's come out (i will never get a 1st year model) that way you know if the new 6.7 is good and whatnot.

The 6.4L is very reliable. Very few issues with them, except for issues caused by people running a 310HP tune. I am not an F150 owner spouting off about something I know nothing about. I have owned two 6.4L's, and I haven't had any issues at all. The only recalls were injectors on a specific date range of trucks and a problem with the truck going into regen when in park. A few TSB's, including updating the coolant de-gas bottle to keep the radiator from failing. Nothing major. Definitely no reason for people to say it was ureliable. In fact, the only negative thing that can be said about the 6.4L is that fuel mileage isn't great. I get 12.5 MPG around town with 35x12.5x20 M/T tires. I see 15 MPG on the highway. I don't think it's too low for an 8,000 lb truck.

I'm not sure why you keep knocking the 6.4... other than people ripping them apart from driving them like race cars after adding an extra 310 hp from pressing a button, they are very solid trucks. Just thirsty if you leave the DPF on. I'd own one.

Underdog, I'd avoid a 6.0, unless you want to pony up the $3000 to get the headgaskets done and EGR deleted.

well actually i won't be able to actually race a car this year unless i get some good sponsors, moved for school (it gets expensive...) but i am trying to get with a friend and help him with his car (plus he has the little v6 truck, and the tracks are a good 30-45min drive from me now, so i would love to help him tow...) last year i got 9th in the points out of 24+ cars, (would have had 8th if i didn't leave for school two weeks before season ended.. and i got rookie of the year)

here is a pic of my car...

and then my friends make fun of me for this...

driver side door, rookie trophy, air cleaner, and underdog vinyl figure that rode in my pass side rear quarter window
