I have a 2008 5.4L. After this plowing season I am going to modify the muffler. I have done so already on my 06 Dakota w/ a magnaflow kit and it has got to be quite loud. I don't wish quite so loud on the 250. At least enough to drown out the belt noise anyway. Anyone modify thier 250 5.4L?

Well you could buy a cat-back, I'm sure there are a handful of brands out there.

Or just go to any custom exhaust shop and tell them what you told us and they'll probably have a mellow tone aftermarket muffler they can weld in place of your stock one.

 

Best exhaust mod you can do is to remove that big V shaped hunk of iron inbetween the exhaust manifolds...

Will a modified exhaust, in this case no change in pipe dia, just a muffler change, affect engine breaking due to less back pressure?

 

I think Z was being sarcastic...and saying that the best exhaust mod you could make would be a different engine.

 

Why dont you do a 22" or 18" MagnaFlow, just replace the muffler and throw a nice 3.5X12 MagnaFlow tip.

 

I put on a 22" magnaflow on my F150 with the same engine as you have so assuming the stock exhaust is a bout the same mine came with a 32" muffler and there was no sound.
With the 22" I get a nice low rumble while driving with a load on.that should drown out the whine from your belts
While cruising down the highway you will barely notice the magnaflow
