I put $600 on it to hold it until I can go back and sign the paperwork.

Let me know what you think
Yup...it's gonna 'feel' sluggish both being empty, but if you put an equal heavy load on that versus your F150 it will be night and day in favor of that 7.3L. It looks clean, and if it drives good...why not?

it's been awhile...long of the short of it the transmission went out on the truck I was looking at I guess while one of the salesmen was driving it?? Either way, my grandpa bought some more work trucks at an auction...two '02 regular cab long bed f-150's and an F-350 DRW Flat bed with the 7.3 in it. I've been driving it around and it is very nice and can really pull well. He talked to a guy at the dealership again a few days and there is an 04' F250 with around 120,000 miles. Now, I know that was a pretty bad year for that engine but if it already has that many miles on it...isn't that good? meaning it made it this far? They want around 16k for. I already sent emails asking about the work done on it such as injectors and such. It is pretty nice. Should I be smart and stay away from it though? It is a Supercrew short bed Lariat.

Thanks

Aaron

Well.. if the OASIS turns out good...who knows, but I'd try and haggle a lower price. Never pay what they are askin'!

Why not get the 1996 with a new transmission? Or buy it very discounted and put a new tranny in yourself? Either way I'd pass on the 04.

The salesmen said the guy that was test driving it ended up buying it. He ended up buying it right then for $7,000 because of the transmission. Pretty decent price. I am test driving that 04 today and later this week driving about an hour to look at a 2003 F-350 with a V-10. This shopping around is starting to get a little old.

When you take your time - look at the options ~ it usually pays off...hang in there

Got off early to go take it for a drive. Man it was nice and drove well. It was a Lariat as well. I talked to one of the mechanics at the dealer about it because the sales lady didn't know much. He went through and talked to me about the maintenance on it. All the oil changes had been done by the dealer and he got a couple new batteries from them and that was about it. Is it too good to be true that an 04 could be okay?

6.0 liter Powerstrokes are an interesting animal. We've got several in the fleet. One (a 2003 F-350) could star in its own horror movie. It's been an absolute maintenance nightmare for just over 100,000 miles. I wouldn't give you ten cents for it. Another (a 2005 F-350) has been absolutely flawless for almost 80,000 miles. We've also got a 2006 (in an F-450) that's been kind of middle of the road. A friend of mine had a 2003 Excursion 6.0 that he put the full Gale Banks Six Shooter kit in and pounded the hell out of it for 75,000 virtually trouble free miles. Go figure, that one should have scattered parts all over town.

If you want my 2 cents, avoid the 2003 / 2004 Powerstokes (except a 2003 7.3) all together. The later six liters actually seemed to run pretty well.

Here is my $.02 worth. Avoid the 6.0L like the plague!! My father has a 05 F350, FX4, SC long box, DRW, 6.0L/auto with only 38,000 miles right now. It has had a fair share of problems, 5 injectors-bad mileage-and another fluke thing with the turbo that hasn't happened again. On monday dad ended up buying a 02 F350 SC, long box, DRW, 4X4 7.3L/auto with only 53,000 miles that I found on carsoup.com, I told dad that if he didn't buy it I was. He is very, very happy to be back in a 7.3L, in the first 200 miles he get 17.8 mpg which is much better than he ever saw with the 6.0L.

So in other words get either a V10 or 7.3L, and stay far far away from the 6.0L

Everybody I know who has had a 7.3 and 6.0 (and even a 6.4) said they miss their 7.3.

TRUE You don't know how they guy that had it before treated it. You can destroy a truck in 140K miles.

Not if you like your engine to idle without your foot on the gas.

I wouldn't buy a truck with a bunch of miles on it unless I knew the truck and the owner. You don't know what you're getting into with a high mileage truck. They might be miles like my truck has had!

Nope - K&N worked just just fine. Worked well with the 6.9L
