Hpop
Hpop
Well, driving my 7.3L to work the other morning my truck started feeling funny, so I decided to pull over in a parking lot in this little town i go through. As I got in the parking lot, my truck stalled. i got out to the smell of burning oil. Having just changed the oil and all about 3 weeks prior, I thought maybe loose drain plug or filter. Looking under the truck with my flashlight, everything is covered in oil from the engine to the tailgate underneath. After further inspection, I noticed the oil was coming from up top somewhere. I popped the hood and it took a little while, but I found a little piece of o ring sticking out of the plug on my high pressure oil pump. After having it towed, getting a seal kit, replacing the 3 o rings on the hpop, almost 4 more gals of oil, and a lot of engine cleaning, my baby is as good as new. So I think. I am worried I cavitated the pump and maybe scored the piston shoes in the pump. Maybe not. but I don't want to find out on the side of the road again somewhere. This was the first time in 178k miles she has let me down.
So after all this rambling on.... my question to anyone who has read this far is.... aftermarket hpop's. Has anyone ever known anyone or done it them selves, ran an aftermarket higher pressure hpop. I found a few online but the on I am interested in is a stealth hpop. it runs at about 4000 psi where the stock one is about 3000 psi max. I spoke with the engineers who designed it and have been testing it. They say no problems. No new lines needed, no problems for injectors...ect. just supplies more oil to the injectors for better atomization of the fuel and no more of that lag when you get on it at 50-75% throttle. More torque and hp, better mpg, lower egt's. Bad part- it is about three times more then what a new hpop from ford cost. But after years of driving and towing and having that emissions light come on in the lower left of my consol here and there, $1700.00 doesn’t sound that bad. Just my thoughts.

Stealth has a new kick *** HPOP pump that is out. It's a giant single one.
Just finished reading your post, and saw you commented on the Stealth... lol. Few guys in my Powerstroke club have em and love em.

Running low on oil like that didn't cavitate your pump. The pump pressure drops too low to fire the injectors hence stopping the engine before it can suck a significant amount of air. The stealth is nice, but unless you NEED it I'd stick with what you've got.
Yeah, that is the problem sometimes. As long as my family doesn't need, I usually go get what I want. Now that I have researched the stealth pump and have been told what it can do for me, now I WANT it. Being schooled, trained, and years of experience in hydraulics, I know that running the pump low won’t hurt it. But, running it pretty much empty; as I did; can ruin it. I know it has its own reservoir that draws from the oil pan. When I drained the rest of the oil out of the pan (into cheese cloth to check for any type of metal that could be present), I had less than a gallon.
I know feel as if I am trying to justify my decision to everyone on buying this new pump, as if hoping for approval. Well, my mind is made up. I am going to call them back Monday, and order one. The money is not an issue, so why not. It would be a good time to pull the turbo and change the o-rings on the pedestal also.
I will try and post my opinion on it later down the road.

yeah, i have a few thousand dollars in mod's in my truck. from banks, bully dog, and k&n ( i know a lot of people are against CAI's, but i have never had a problem. knocking on wood while typing this.) not trying to make a sled puller or drag truck, but we all like a little extra power.

Yeah, given the companies you mentioned you don't have the supporting mods. Banks and Bully Dog are pretty much a joke in the 7.3L market. If you had a true chip you could take full advantage of the new hpop, at least as far as your stock injectors can take you. I'd suggest you look into selling what you've got and getting one.
People aren't against CAIs, in fact its one of the first mods to do, its the K&N filter. Hold it and a paper filter up to the light and you'll see why the K&N has dusted more engines than any other filter. I like my Green filter, or the old paper filter from Napa.

Banks, Bullydog, and K&N don't make any mods that would directly require you to need a Stealth Pump. If you were running different injectors, I'd say go for it. Please, ditch the K&N before you smoke your turbo, if you haven't already. If you do go with the Stealth pump (which is a good idea), you won't take full advantage of it with the canned Bullydog tunes. You'll want custom tunes.
Yep, you need the Ford AIS box or a good DIY intake. For a chip contact Tony Wildman or Jody Tipton (DPTuner). They can custom write a program to take advantage of the extra oil you have. Without that you might as well put a stock pump back on because it'll act just like one without the right programming. Hopefully you have gauges and some mods to the transmission (if its an auto). Staying with stock injectors you can get by with fewer mods to the trans, but if you go much further then you're talking a few thousand bucks.
