f250 with 5.4

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For all you f250 5.4 owners. Can you please tell me how much gas mileage you are getting with the 5.4 in a F250??? I am considering getting a 08 F250 4x4 with the 5.4. I rarely tow anything other than a 4 wheeler trailer or small tractor. I just want the body style and 4x4 option. I can't justify spending the extra on the diesel and diesel motor. Thanks

F250

I'm looking at a Ford repoed F250 8 months old someone could not pay for. It's an 2008 F250 4x4 5.4 with alittle over 5000 miles one it. I already have a F150 with the 5.4 that only gets in the 12 to 14mpg range. So any slight decrease from that would acceptable to me. I just can't justify the cost, upkeep or use of a diesel. I only put about 12,000 miles a year on my current truck. Thanks

the 5.4 2v is way to underpowered for a 250 but..08 has the 3v so if your not gonna do much towing should be no problems.

if your getting a good deal and you find it under powered you can always do a gear swap or add a supercharger or turbo and call it a day

Not to be a smart *** but someone probably realized they couldn't tow much with it so its on the lot again.

Why would you want a F250 over F150 with the same engine? I'd take the F150 over it anyday if you aren't towing that much.

I've never understood why Ford would put at 5.4 in a 3/4 ton truck.

Concurr with "rolling rock." You have to get in b/w 3-5000 rpm for any real acceleration.

The 5.4L is adequete - that's all it is. If ya don't tow much, but decide to tow something and ya don't mind taking your time you'll be fine. On flat terrain it'll be OK, but in the mountains you WILL hate it as it will be 'peddle to the metal' all the time (except downhill). If ya off road it can actually be a good motor as it's light, but you'll want 4:30 gears or higher (go 4:55 ++ with anything more than a 35" tire).

Good Luck

Oh..if your concerned about gas mileage look somewhere else - it's terrible!

couldnt agree more... i plow alot and it does well but...the few times ive towed things..forget it gotta have at least the v10. 5.4 is great as far as reliabilty though ive not had one major issue with it. 5.4 is good if you just want to get by.

Under powered NO.. Pulled my trailer just fine. Gas mileage was crap tho. 11-12 on the highway, 10 around town and 9-10 towing.

35's with stock 410 gears.

Saying the 5.4 is under powered is like saying the stock chevy 350 is under powered. Almost the same displacement and the 5.4 has higher numbers then the 350 had.

Couldn't agree more...
For what it is the 3V 5.4l is a great motor. I don't think its underpowered by any stretch... I think with the mods I have my truck has quite a bit of power.

I really like the V10 too and if I towed frequently that's the engine I would have gotten. Stock for stock I think its even better than the diesel... the diesel really shines when mod'd out though.

Finally got it!!!

Well after looking far a wide for a new(to me)truck for my self I finally got myself a new one. I ended up buying the 2008 F250 4x4 with the 5.4 that I stated earlier. So far I am loving the truck. Will get a few tanks of gas thru it then see what kinda mileage I am getting with it. Already looking to add some accessories to the truck. A rollnlock bed cover, tint on front windows, cat back exhaust system, and maybe even a cold air intake. Any suggestions?? Thanks

No offense but your thought of the V10 being better than the PSD is a tad skewed. From a reliability stand point you have a case from a torque and pulling power, not a chance. The V10 only has 32 more horses than the 5.4 and the PSD has over 200+lbs of Torgue over the V10 and over 65 more Horses.

That makes a big difference when pulling with a load.

Actually you'd be surprised what a 3V V10 with the 4:30 rear can do against a 3:73 rear diesel. It's not quite the night and day difference some would like to think. For ALL THE TIME towing scenarios sure the diesel, but the V10 has many merits too when it comes to reliability, cold start, it's light weight motor helps off road in mud and uphill sprint, and all this without the aid of a turbo (twin-turbo) and 18:1 compression...Personally, I think both types of motors are cool and worthwhile choices

Just saying that both have their merits and demerits ~ it really depends on what one is looking for in a truck.
