very strong diesel fumes
very strong diesel fumes
well my dads f350 has a 4" exhaust from the turbo back no cat no muffler, and exits out the side, but in the past few months the fumes have been getting worse and worse, to where sitting at a light he has to roll down the windows. now normally id say its because it exits out the side but it wasnt like this before....also i checked for leaks and i didnt see any. we opened the hood and he started it and the fumes were almost instant under the hood
any ideas of what it could be?

Ok I did a search over on Super Duty Diesel and came up with a couple things it could be.
1. Cracked Y pipe going to the turbo.
2. Loose down pipe clamp on the turbo. It seems there were a few members over there that had theirs loosen up over time and cause what you are experiencing.

Can we like switch trucks?! OMG! I love that diesel smell... I would NOT complain about it.
However, dsq might be hitting it on the head. Look at the simple stuff first. It might be just a lose clamp from the install... we've all made mistakes before installing something or another.

I would highly doubt its the V band clamp as they don't usually loosen up to this level. It could be a crack in the y pipe, but I'd put my money on the gaskets in the up pipes being shot. Crawl under the truck and look up at the exhaust manifolds and up-pipes. The leak should be obvious by the soot trail. I'm guessing that the truck doesn't have very good spool up anymore either. If the spool up is worse then its definetly on the hot side. If it still spools fast then its probably on the cold side.
What kind of engine is in it? 6.0? 7.3? Need to know!
If it's a 6.0L, Check for a pinhole in the drivers side turbo inlet pipe, right at the flex joint. Look for the soot. You might need a mirror. It's very common.
thanks guys sounds like it is probably on the hot side, its down on power a bit....
