Cummings probably wants to spread out considering how much in trouble Chrysler is in.

I personally think the new 6.4l PS has an equal amount of issues compared to the 6.7l Cummins TD...

From issues I've read on the Diesel Stop, it's quite evident that the quality of diesel engines have gone to the crapper.

That's not only them, but also International is having a problem with their new diesels. I was talking to a bus garage mechanic for my local area bus garage, and he was telling me how he wants to kill these engine engineers for poor design. Plus he stated that the quality of the components is horrid. He's been an bus garage mechanic for 20+ years. He told me that the older engines were a breeze to work on, no computers, etc. He was talking to me about a bus that the dash would light up like a frakin' Christmas tree and he still can't figure it out, and Internation wants to send a tech out, but it's going to cost some absurd amount of money.

I'm tell you... these new engines are nothing but hunks of junk.

You won't see a Cummins engine in a light/medium duty Ford pickup from the factory anytime soon.

Cummins is contractually obligated to provide engines to Chrysler. Period.

While a Cummins in a Superduty would be pretty damn sweet, it's not going to happen unless an owner does it themselves. It's my understanding that after the problems with Navistar, the next diesels will be an in-house designed diesel by Ford.

tnsilverfx4, Caterpillar will be out of the on-road engine biz by 2010.

I heard they were going to cummins as well. However, I aint believing it until I read it off a site written by Ford or something. If it does happen.

Whats so wrong with ditching an inferior engine and going to a much stronger engine?

Now its laughable how every few months someone comes up with another BS rumor thread about how Ford is going to Cummins or Cat or that Ford owns Cummins, etc. Some very simple searches usually can dispell all of these rumors.

First off, Ford won't be using Cummins in the foreseable future if ever. Cummin's contract with Diamler lasts till somewhere around 2011 or so. Ford is parting ways with Navistar as early as 2010, possibly 2011. The contract was slated to end in 2011, but Ford has made no secret about its development of a replacement in-house diesel engine (project scorpion) which was supposed to be ready by 2010. Navistar is sueing Ford for breach of contract over this.

Ford won't use Caterpillar as they don't dabble in small onroad engines and haven't for years. As stated CAT is completely getting out of all onroad diesel engine production in North America in 2010. They will only build onroad diesels on a limited basis in a joint venture for select European regions. Since I don't feel like digging up the article on this I'm going from memory, but I believe its a joint venture with Navistar.

The future of Cummins with Diamler is a little sketchy though as they have entertained the idea of going to a Mercedes V8 diesel. Its not known if that will ever come to be, but they'd have people lines up to buy those. They are very impressive engines.

Now as to the reliability of the big 3s new Tier IV engines, they have issues, but look at the complexity. The problem is the EPA mandating the air standards forcing mfg into complying. They also can't use all the components that they want to use to build these engines as the cost would be astronomical and nobody would pay it. You have to find a common ground and usually thats going to a cheaper supplier knowing that you will get a some warranty claims from them, but the flip side is increasing the price of the truck to cover a better component. I deal with this in the ag industry (product development) on a daily basis. Don't shoot the mfg over this their hands are tied. One other thing I've noticed in regards to techs is that alot of the older guys aren't worth a crap on new equipment. They know the old stuff thats 20-30 years old and can work on it, but either don't have the ability nor willingness to learn the new engines. I have dealt with alot of techs that can work on old Axial Flows just fine, but give them an 8010 and you get the deer in the headlights look.

I would Love to have a Cummins in my Super Duty, especially a 12 valve 5.9, I used to think Cat was one of the best diesels around but after our new 12m Motorgader started knocking at 67 hours, they've got me worried. Don't get me wrong Cat made some of the best engines ever but Im a Cummins fan when it comes to the diesel world.
