Looking for a Superduty
I have a 5.4 in my '00. Im running a 2 inch lift with 33x12.50's and a 16x10 inch rim, 4x4 of course and mine pulls just fine for a 3/4 ton gasser. I average right at 12.5mpg's around town, foot to the floor, or barely on the gas doesn't matter, still 12.5. I've pulled my bobcat and john deere 5310 4x4 with loader on a 7 ton hudson tag trailer with no trouble. 3.73 gears by the way. Dont get me wrong I love a diesel motor but would never by any new pickup truck diesel's, Way too many problems for me. Im a mechanic and work on the old detroits mostly and these new diesels especially the new ones cant even compare as far as reliability to the older bullet proof diesels. To me a diesel in a pickup is overkill unless you work it HARD day in and day out.
The diesel folks with 'it lasts so long ' is a bogus argument. There are a number of 300k V10's out there that have not had one thing done to them except the normal 'routine' maintenance. I saw two '08 trucks...the V10 and 6.4L diesel go at it at the dunes at Silver Lake Dunes. Both were stock (except lift kits and tires) and the V10 did everything the diesel could do...including a TIE going up Test Hill.
Seeing that just made me laugh. Sure the diesels can be tuned insanely, but a supercharged V10 ain't no slouch either. The only time I would consider a diesel is if I was towing heavy loads ALOT! That is where diesel shines!!

hey guys just thought I'd update.
I've been searching the internet and going to dealers around where I live. I've been up to Chicago twice to test drive a couple of 7.3L. Both needed some work and one had the transmission slipping pretty good. I then found a 2002 F-350 Regular cab with the 7.3L with just work truck options but it had only about 130,000 miles on it. Drove well and I liked it except for the crank windows, etc etc but I can live with that since I keep a truck to have for when I work.
I left the dealer after I couldn't talk him down from $12k and when I returned the next day to see if he changed his mind, it had been sold already. Bad luck I guess.
I might hold off until the spring or I might keep looking.
Thanks guys
