2 Dumb PSD questions

Ok ready for this?

1. Can a 06 PSD be set to use the high idle option with the uplifter shifters?
2. Why is this cool or needed?


Sorry...had to ask, but I noticed that during the the cold warm up, my PSD automatically goes to high idle and it cycles until the truck is warm.

I assume you meant "upfitter switches"? Yes, it can be wired to the switches. Do a search on The Diesel Stop. Ther is alot of information there. I actually pronted it off to do it, but I probably won't get top it before I sell the truck this spring. High idle is used to prevent "wet stacking" due to excessive idling. Wet stacking is something like the build-up of excessive carbon on the cylinder heads from unburnt fuel, etc. Read up a bit on it. It will basically destroy your diesel engine over time. The older PDS'd could come with an automatic idle control option that mounted a small digital control panel under the dash board above the transmission hump.

1. Yes it is possible, (I have it connected to #3)
2. Cool and Needed....I have a 1500W inverter in my truck, whenever I am using a lot of wattage, turn the high idle switch on and it will idle up/down as needed to maintain the voltage. (like when out camping with the fifth wheel and don't have power hookups available and the battery needs a charge, fire up the truck, turn up the idle for awhile and it re-charges the trailer). Also to avoid wetstacking as previously posted if you idle lots for some reason, but I don't idle much unless I am running my inverter.

Why is it needed? If left to idle too long, a diesel will actually over-cool (yes, over-cool, not over-heat). Over-cooling can result of gelling of the fuel onto the cylinder walls. Raising the idle to 1200 RPM will increase the exhaust temps enough to prevent this. High idle also doubles as PTO control for other stuff. Ford makes a device (AIC=auxillary idle controller) that you can use to set the RPM wherever you want when idling the truck. Dad has one on his 7.3 and it is pretty cool to play with if nothing else!

The AIC box works for 7.3L and I think the 03/04 6.0L trucks. The 05+ trucks don't use the APCM box. They have the APCM feature already built into the PCM. Thats why on the 05+ all you have to do is add one jumper wire and you have high idle.

Those of you that did this mod, why do some of the directions say to use the pass through wires when they are supposed to be already there?

If by 'pass through wires' you mean the set of wires that run through the firewall and are not connected at either end, then NO, you do not use these. The two wire you need to connect are under the drivers side dash. It's been awhile since I did it, but there are instructions on which two wires to connect on dieselstop.com.

Manage to get the Mod done...took only about 30 min or so.

While there I found the pass through wires which I couldn't find before so over the next few months I am giong to redo the back up lighting and add some bed lights.

Thanks for the heads up on the mod.

I only did the SEIC this time, (holds at 1200), didn't figure I needed other one, if I do, it's not hard to change it or add to another switch.

findings: its awfully tight in there....
