won't shift into reverse

f250 1986 4speed 6.9 diesel

The shifter wil grind when trying to shift into reverse. The first 4 gears are not smooth either.

I replaced the master cylinder and pretty sure I got the air out -to no avail. I looked at the throw of the slave and it is only about 3/4 of an inch. Is that about right? I looked at my antique 1964 f250 with mechanical link and that throws a good 1.5 inches.

should I now replace the slave?

The tranny does not slip on hills so I do not beleive it to be the clutch

any advice? thanks

Does it shift smoothly when you double clutch it? Could be the syncros going out.
