3V 6.8 vs Chev's 8.1

Has anyone had any longterm experience with the 3V V10 vs Chevy's 8.1 motor (no longer avail). The hp and torque #'s are close. I remember when I test drove the 8.1 it seemed like it had more strong low end feel but really lacked top end. The V10 is so smooth I am wondering if that had anything to do with the 'feel'...I do admit the 6.8 3V V10 had better mid range and top end. This was with 3:73's though on the Ford so that's why I went with the 4:30s eventually. Unfortunately I don't know what the ratio was on the Chevy I test drove. Any comments would fun to hear...

A friend of mine has a GMC HD with the 8.1, he uses it to pull his race trailer, he says there is not much that it won't pull, however the GAS Mileage is terrible.......has allot on the low end........

I would definitely take the v10 over that 8.1.

The 8.1 just got totally phased out if I am not mistaken. the 3v V10 has TONS of power and no real issues. The *only* potential issues would be plugs, which can be remedied with regular and early maintenance.

Luckily my choice was for the Ford's gasser back when I ordered it late 05 (06 model). I just haven't heard much on the 8.1 motor since then. My friend who had the 454 in his '99 dually was always hackin' on the 2V V10 back then. So I was just wonderin' about the comparison with the big 8.1 496 against the 416(?) 3V 6.8 these days...I do know that my 3V V10 rocks over the ole '99 454

Yes, I know that...but I am looking for any comments about the two engines. Since I bought my truck in '06 the 8.1 Chevy was also offered at that time so I was wondering about any comparisons/comments some posters have when dealing with these motors/trucks...

I know that most late model GM truck engines have a piston slap issue. My wifes 2003 tahoe with the 5.3 has it. However, the 8.1 tranny also got you the Allison Transmission. Personally, I know of only one person who has the 8.1 and he's had good luck with it.

Unlike our Ford's, GM does not badge there 6.0 and 8.1 powered trucks differently so I don't know how popular of an option it really was. Personally, I am not a big IFS fan so I never really considered a GM truck for myself. I will say the wifes Hoe rides nice though .

Anyway, I drive a V-10 with no regrets and I've had plenty of different trucks including diesels. Enjoy your truck.

Got the V10 in my Excursion, and the torque is neck-snapping. Passing on the highway has never been a problem - even with my family of 6, and enough luggage for 5days inside.
