I didn't get the tailgate step and I don't regret it at all. I guess when I get so old that the tire is no longer a viable step for me, then I will consider it. To me, it would be more of a hassle to have to pull it out, stand up the handle, step up, step down, pust it back in, and fold the handle back up. Plus, I am 6'3" and weigh about 250 lbs and I did not feel like that step would last long, especially if I was carrying any kind of weight when I stepped on the step. With that said, if I was old, I would have the tailgate step.
We got the step for a couple of reasons. First off we haul our own water, so we get in and out of the bed to pull the hose up to our 325 gallon tank in the bed. I usually hop over a tire, but when the wife is filling she uses the tailgate to get in and out of the bed. In our 2000 F250 that we are going to trade in on the '08, we have a small step stool in the back for her. She also told me to lift this truck and put some bigger tires on it, so that'll be another good reason to have it.

Well, I was putting in at 256 and hauling 80 lb bags of crete up mine with no problem at all. I've dropped to 226 now, but I love it when having to load things from the ground. My dog likes it too since the back is higher than my old 06.

went to l.a. car show and slammed the tailgate of a new tundra, no wonder they are folding under a couple of lbs. a beer can feels like it would have more strength. very dissapointed in a $47000 truck.
I liked the tail gate step initially, but after some serious thought -- figured it would be pretty rough on the noggin stepping up when my fiver is hooked up
. Seriously though, my SIL just bought a new F250 King Ranch 4X4 with the step. Pretty nice. He uses his quite a bit, but doesn't raise the handle - feels flimsy and at 38, he still has pretty good balance ... now me, that would be a different story - can't even tie shoes without falling over so that is why I hold the door frame and have velcro straps on my shoes
