Cold Start

We have a F350 Lariat 7.3L diesel, 2003, hates the cold, well cool even, won't start without block heater even at about 38 f. Is this normal? glow plugs? relay? Any info would be appreciated. Also biggest tires that would fit this truck stock.

Thanks

Change all 8 glow plugs and the relay. If one goes bad it tries to drag down the remaining 7 and the relay. If its already starting that hard then this has already happened. Its not really a hard job as much as its a pita. Just pray the plugs don't fall apart when pulling them out and try and fall into the cylinders.

Largest tire you can fit on the stock rim is a 285/75/16. You can fit a 305/70/16 without a lift, but you need to go to an 8" rim (stock is 7" wide). The 305 is the same height as the 285, just wider (33x12.5).

Thanks Powerstroke, are there different types of glow plugs or just what Ford offers? We're just curious and in Canada so guess we better get that job done.

Find your local Navistar/International truck dealer. Thats where Ford gets its PSD parts from since Navistar builds the engine. By the time you buy it from Ford they've put their markup on top of the markup Navistar charges to them.

Sure that works for the 6.9L (what the article was written about) or the 7.3L IDI, but the heads on a PSD are different. You're talking direct injection vs indirect. Though some of the tips in there could probably be adapted.
