Surging / No power on take off.

Ok so here's the story. I had a 2000 7.3L (LOVED IT!) we had a freak ice strom about 2 months ago and I had a car jump the median on a freeway and come into my lane. Needless to say I avoided the car, but ended up rolling it down a hill about 8 times then she burned up.

Anyway I bought a 2005 6.0L and I've noticed two main differences.

1. The truck will surge in "Drive" and/or "Reverse" it's almost like someone is pressing the throttle while I've got the break applied. This never happed with my good old 7.3L.

2. My 6.0L does not have any guts out of the hole. I step on the throttle and can count of two seconds before the truck even desides to move. I was told that it may be "Turbo Lag". But my 7.3L had a turbo and I could light up the tires at will. What gives? How come an engin with more horsepower can't even break the tires loose?

So any insight ono these two problems I would really appreciate it.

Thanks guys!

You many need a reflash or an update. The stock setting on the 6.0 is pretty slow off the line but not 2 seconds. What you are probably experiencing is the turbo lag. If you got a programmer and a responsible tune, you can fix that without harming your engine.

EDIT---you could also try to disconnect both of your batteries and turn your lights on for 2-3 min. Then turn the lights off and hook up the batts again. This does a "soft reset" on the PCM. The PCS does learn to some extent based on driving habits. This resets it to factory.

I think the lag you are referring to is probably normal, it takes some getting used to and I don't care for it either.

PS. If you want to smoke the tires, just lightly hold the brake until the boost comes up to say 20psi, and then let off the brake

The 6.0L should have little to no lag at all due to the VGT. Most likely what has happened is the vanes in the turbo have gummed up and thus are not adjusting pitch anymore.

Thanks guys! I've collected your suggestions and now will bring it in and have the dealership try and figure it out. By the way I forgot to mention. I've had it in twice and they didn't find anything wrong with it because it wasn't throwing any codes. But maybe this will help to get them off there a$$ and actually act like a mechanic not a part replacer.

Thanks again!

surging diesel

Like powerstroke77 says, it could be the vgt veins of the vgt solenoid itself acting up. Being a pcm reset by pulling the cables is a worthless idea. It should be done with the IDS. Resetting kampwr. P0603. Reflashing the pcm, ficm,& tcm will most likely not fix your concern. It will help if you are having a rough idle on cold mornings though. Pull the IAT2 sensor on the top of intake & see if its all covered w/ carbon & clean it. Another problem is the egr valve may need to be upgraded to a new revised one for surging concerns.

Of course this would fix it, man why didn't I think of this? Just get you some #4 ball bearings and some 30 weight motor oil, and you are good to go. Hook that bad boy up to an HP 2323 Spectrometer and check the calibrated coupler on the roto thing.

You should not have that much turbo lag, I have a 2002 7.3, there is none to speak of.

I do know some people that have the 6.0 and the all have said the wished that they would have kept the 7.3's

As for the code p0603 My dealerships in canada tell me that don't exist. Does any one know what it is for.

Best advice be persistant and make sure that the dealership has ALL of your complaints wrtten on your invoice. This goes a Long long way to fight for you, after the warrenty done, and you have problems.

See my post in the f250 diesel section

You are definately experiencing turbo lag, but 2 seconds is uncommon ... it should start to spool up in less than 1 second. Best way to reduce the lag is to roll into the throtle. Stomping it seems to agrivate it even more. As for lighting em up, hold the brakes, roll into the throatle to get the boost up towards 20PSI, dump the brakes and floor the pedal. Doing that, I can light up all 4 back tires ... in fact, I have a hard time holding it back after I reach 10PSI boost - the brake pedal starts to head toward the floor as I have to apply more brake to keep it from moving.

The surging is NOT right. I'm not going to hazard a guess as to what is causing it, but I would request the dealer verify all computer updates have been applied.
