Best year for the 6.0L diesel
Not even all the 2004 6.0L trucks are safe. Pretty much anything with an 03 engine in it is junk. You're basically looking at the 2004.5 and newer with the 6.0L for a slightly more reliable engine. Even then it will be a crap shoot whether or not its a good one. The 6.0L is very hit or miss. Some run for 100k+ without incident, other can't go a single week without being in the shop. Myself I'd never own a 6.0L. I've never come across a good one. Our 2 service trucks (granted both 03 F550s) have been huge flops. One is in the process of being lemon lawed, the other just gets fixed constantly. The 06/07 rental truck we had last year had problems. The best one I've ever ridden in has only been ok, and nothing that impressed me over my 7.3L. People say there are super strong running ones out there, but I have never come across one.
If you want a 7.3L you can go as new as 03 as the 6.0L was not sold until mid year. Just keep looking, there are low mileage 02 and 03 PSDs out there.
