I bought my first diesel pickup yesterday. It is an 05 Crew Cab FX4 Lariat with 21k miles. I've always performed required maintenance on all my other vehicles but I know diesels require alot more. Could you guys guide me on the basics(oil, oil filter, fuel filters, etc.). Thanks. Owner's manual is missing.

 

I have the same truck with 54k. I get my oil changed every 3-5k miles which on the diesel is a bit more expensive due to the over 2 galls of oil required. Has two fuel filters that should be replaced every other oil change or 15k miles. I personal put some diesel klean fuel additive in mine once a month with this USLD fuel. Aside from that the only extra I do is the Transmission flush every 30k miles (Dealer Recommended). Some guys will argue with that one but I have the cash to get it done and it defintly doesn't hurt.

When it comes to coolant replacement be very careful these things require a specific radiator fluid. I'm sure Adrian or some of the other guys will chime in with alot more info.

 

I'm new to the diesel world to, but so far:
My motor (7.3) takes 15 quarts of oil and a filter the size of your head. My drain pain is a 5 gallon bucket. Prefill the filter with oil, it takes about 2 quarts to do that.
The fuel filter is on top of the motor under the Powerstroke cover. Easy to replace. Just make sure you get the old beveled gasket off, or else diesel will spray everywhere when you turn the key on. Ask me how I know that one.

 

Keep the info comin... I am an F250 owner now too as of last night!!! Are you guys using motorcraft for your oil and filter?? Thats what I used in the f150...

 

Yes. The Motorcraft comes in 5qt jugs at Advance Auto Parts, $9.99 a jug. You'll need the filter FL(I think)-1995. The one thats about a foot long, and says Powerstroke diesel.

As for buying fuel filters and parts for your 6.0L, check out your local International dealer for pricing and you will find they are MUCH cheaper than buying from Ford.

 

Sorry bud, the 6.0 is a whole different animal. Fuel filter is somewhere down on the frame. Oil filter is a removable paper element. I don't even know the oil amount required.

Forgot to mention, I converted from an 04 F150 FX4 to this diesel. Having the leveling kit installed as we speak. Next, tires/wheel upgrade. Anyone selling? I like the stock 20's. Look nice.

 

Next question, what's the tallest tire size I can comfortably fit on the 05 Super Duty. Got it back and now has a nice stance but alot of wheelwell space. I'd like to go with 35's but would hate for it to look too bulky.

 

i have 315-70-17s on my stock height f-350. they do not rub on anything.
