Question F250/350 engines

I ordered an 07 f150 and I cancelled it because I decide to go with a 250 or a 350 maybe diesel, not sure of this since diesel is now about .30 to .40 cents expensier than gas.

BTW the wich ones has better fuel economy? I use to have a dually diesel
f350 with a 7.3L and averaged 14 miles to a gal.

The reason I changed my mine with the F150 is because we decided to get a TT and I also have a 23 feet boat that weights between 6500# to 7000#, and I been reading this forum and I think the F150 will be working a bit hard.

I will go with a use one and was wondering what is the best year and what engine (diesel), I heard Ford had two engines 6l and 7.3L, is this true?

Also, what is really the difference between the 250 and 350?

Thanks in advanec for the advice

If your going with an 07 you'll only have the engine choices of the 5.4L V8, the V10 or the 6.0L diesel. The 7.3 was replaced by the 6.0 in 03 I believe. As far as the differences between a 250 and a 350 I'm sure someone of the other guys will have some info on that.

In reference to fuel efficency, if your going with the 6.0 I've seen numbers from 10-18 with an average around 14-15 mpg and on my truck it averages around 11.

How does it compare to the 7.3l?

Thanks for the quick reply

The 7.3L is more reliable, louder, and is doesn't have the quick power potential.

The 6.0L is a crap shoot whether or not you get a good one. The 2 we have at work have both been basket cases. The 06 rental truck we had also had issues. We've got 2 07s that will be delivered in about a month from Knapahide, so I'm curious to see if they are as bad as previous trucks. The 6.0L also has the potential to be much quieter than the 7.3L. Though they're not all quiet. Finally if you're looking for power you can get alot more out of the 6.0L with just a chip or programmer than you can with the 7.3L. They both max out with hp around the same point, and it takes about the same to get both to that level, but the 6.0L jumps out ahead quicker than the 7.3L. A 6.0L can get up to 400hp with an SCT programmer, a 7.3L requires about $5000 in parts to get there. A chip on a 7.3L is only good to about 300-350hp. Myself I'd never want a 6.0L. The 7.3L is the only Navistar engine I'd run, but in honesty of this one ever goes a Cummins is going in its place. They on average get much better fuel mileage, plus make TONS more hp for next to nothing.

I guess if I want to get a F250 or F350 I should go with a gas engine if I don't want to go with an older truck. If I get a diesel engine I'm not looking into getting more power. Since I'm not sure if a F150 is enought I want to get something with a bit more power so at the long run I don't have to change trucks.

So if I want a 7.3L I need to get a 2004 or prior thatn that?

Early 2003 or older. The 7.3L PSD ran from 94.5 to early 2003. In 99 (intro of the SD line) they became intercooled. Starting in 99.5 they got a larger turbo and injectors. Starting in 01 the rods were changed from forged to powdered metal (mfg process) which are much more suceptable to damage from bad chips or any kind of drug.

The 2003.5-2004 6.0L are the most troublesome of the bunch. The 05-07s are better, but still have more than their fair share of issues.

If you really want lots of information on the 6.0 I would suggest thedieselstop.com, alot of our guys here are members there and you can get alot more detailed information from a much greater cross section of 6.0 owners. I have 55k on my 05 with no problems or repairs.
