F350 V10 Auto kick down issues

Hi

I own a 2000 F350 6.8 V10 Dually with Whipple supercharger with only 32,000 miles

I feel the kickdown is wrong but I'm wondering if this is normal or do I have a problem.

Basically if I apply more than 1/4 throttle it kicks down and I would prefere it if it didn't as it auctally slows things down as it kicks down redlines then has to change up after 1 or 2 seconds.

Its approx 500bhp and has lots of torque so does not need to kick down, so the questions are.

1. is this normal

2. is it adjustable or dredded ECU controlled

3. is there anyway of changing it.

I have a Hypertech programmer but that only allows me to adjust the shift point.

Gearbox is standard but has an uprated High stall torque converter and uprated Pulse valve to firm the gear shift, this was all done by Ford Canada when I purchased a brand new auto box in 2004 and had it shipped to the UK

Any help or advice would be much appriciated as I'm on my own in the UK with maybe only 10 or so F350 duallys here and most likely the only supercharged one !!! I must be nuts as we pay approx $8.00 a gallon here

Concerning the quick downshifts...that makes perfect sense considering what you described. I too own a Hypertech controller. Frankly, I don't like it, but when I bought it a few years ago I didn't know any better and went with a big name rather than doing good research first. In my opinion, my Hypertech did absolutely nothing to increase my engine's power output. However, it did cause MUCH more aggressive downshifting, which I do like. I just wish I could have had some power to go with it.

Since the aggressive shifting bothers you, why don't you just remove the Hypertech settings. That would put the tranny back to stock, which with the added power you have might work nicely. If you want the firm shifts without the aggressive downshifting, you are going to need a custom tune I think...however you might get away with installing a shift kit in the tranny. If you do install a shift kit, don't go back to the Hypertech. There is a very clear warning not to use their tranny shift improver with a shift kit!

Hope this helps,
Mike

Hey Mike.

Thanks for your reply, I don't think I worded too good, Although I have the hypertech handheld I've not used it.

I got it thinking I could adjust to stop kick down being so easy and too get rid of the speed limiter, but it don't do S#it!! TOTAL waste of money as I can't even use the so called power up section as I'm already adjusted with the Whipple CPU

The gearbox is basically running factory settings other than the high stall and valve

Hmm...in that case I think you definitely need custom tune. I don't know of any mechanical thing you could adjust that would safely change when the tranny downshifts. Years ago on carb'd engines you could play with the kick-down cable, but those days are long gone. Try giving Troyer Performance a call. I know you are overseas, but I bet there is a lot he could do for you with out messing up your supercharger settings and without needing you to bring the truck to his location. Of course, I could be wrong, but it wouldn't hurt to ask...that's free, except for the phone charges. I don't have his contact info right in front of me, but just search "Troyer" on this forum and you should find his phone number right away.

Good luck!

Mike
