Need help - Crucial Question!!!
Ok, I found a 2004 F-250, V10 right down the street from me. Perfect condition with only 17K miles. It's a 4WD crew cab. It's pretty much the exact vehicle I've been looking for, EXCEPT, it has the 3.73 gearing. I plan on towing what the vehicle tows at MAX capacity, so, I was looking for the 4.10 gears.
I think I can get this thing in the low $20's, so what I'm thinking is to buy the truck and just change the gearing to 4.10. Even if this cost me a grand or so, it's still a hell of deal.
What do you guys think? Is there more to it? The truck does have the tow package, for sure.
Any help would be great, because I've been looking for a long time and I'd hate for another one to get away.
Thanks!

I'd ****** it up. With stock size tires I've drug 14k lbs no problems with 3.73. The torque from the 7.3L helps, but those 6.8L are no means weak and I think you'll be fine. Later if it doesn't suit you, a gear swap isn't a crazy thing to do anyway.

Don't let it slip by. It won't last long before someone else scoops it up.
Can always do a gear swap later, a friend of mine just did a gear swap on his V10 Excursion 4x4 from 3.73's to 4.30's, cost him $1600.

For that money I'd buy it and if I didn't like the way it pulled I'd give Troyer a call for a couple tow tunes before I swapped the gears out. I've pulled plenty of weight many miles with a 350 chevy and 3.73 gears. Not saying I wasn't wishing for the 454 and 4.10s at times, but we always got where we were going.
