Superduty sucks in snow

First decent snow of the season here in East Kentucky. (Yea we have got the shaft on snow this year).

Anyway this is my first trip in a good snow with the Superduty and this thing sucks in the snow. Rearend is out of control under the lightest press of the pedal, no front end traction when turning the wheels, and braking sucked.

I think the main cause is the Conti-Crap tires. They will be replaced Monday.

Due to the ''heavy duty'' setup of the truck, going down a steep hill with pot holes the front and rearend kept breaking traction and sliding. I was ready to open the door and step out at one point.

Yes I know it needs weight in the bed to aid traction and tires will help, but man compared to my F150's in the snow this thing was scary.

If you have the 18" Contis, then yes they are crap. Fine for a summer highway tire as they are quiet, but that's about it.

My "Conti-craps" will break loose in the rain too.

I bought my 250 in the winter last year, so the skins were fresh...it wasn't too bad, but bad.

This year it is horrible, I have to stay in 4 wheel, and even then the front will slide on turns.
Horrible... horrible tires!!!!!

Let me know what skins you get Red. I need to change before I "...open the door and step out ...."

Stay away from the Goodyear MTR if you don't like the Contis. I went with a set on my 250 since the 35s that I had on my 150 (one of the first sets of MTRs made) were terrific and made 75k out of them. Goodyear has since changed the rubber compound and the wear much worse than before, especially under a heavy truck. When we got hit with the snow and ice storm up here in PA last week I had to drive to work in 4x4 for 2 days. If I didn't the back end would want to try and pass the front any time I gave it some throttle. For this reason I'm replacing my replacement tires soon. Probably some BFG ATs or Nitto Terra Grapplers.

we've got Cooper ST's on our 05 250KR its solid- like you said though, with the heavy duty setup, on major ruts and pot holes it will loosen up some- other than that its pretty well planted- in 4wd.

Took the diesel fer a romp through some drifts and the unplowed mess of ice we got last week and real happy with how the steeltex's handle the snow. Got high centered once, but some rockin' got the front end to bite down in. Too bad firestone discontinued them for lasting too long.

After seeing that burnout video, those tires ya got there are probably balder than Britney Spears!

Yeah, they suck. I made that realization about October, when the snow started flying up here in Alaska. I ordered a set on Nitto Terra Grapplers (305 55 20) and some 20" rims, probably saved my life. I lost count how many times I slid into intersections, around corners, and got stuck in my driveway. Almost plowed into a Tahoe coming out of my brother's road, he had to jump halfway into the other lane to avoid me. The Nitto's work excellent on the slick ice, my ABS almost never kicks in anymore. However, getting up and going sometimes requires 4WD, but I'll kick it into 2WD after the ice.

I agree those tires suck.I have them on my 2006 F350 plow truck. Before our first good snow I put a ton of stone in the truck. Now it's like a tank spent 3 long days plowing had no problems. The truck has a 750 pound dump insert in the bed a ton of stone plus 900 pounds of salt. before the stone was put in the bed it sucked getting around. I would spin and slide in only 2 inches of snow.

A few simple mods can really make the difference in snow and mud. Both my old and new F350's have no trouble in snow.

New truck

Nitto Terra Grapples

When I ordered my truck it came from the factory with the Firestones. The day of delivery I replaced the Firestones with 295x70x17 Nitto Terra Grapplers. I was very happy with the Nitto performance in snow. I recently switched back to a F150. I must say that when comparing 2wd the F150 does much better getting rolling then the F250. I contribute it to the heavy front end in the diesels. When 4wd becomes necessary, I felt the F250 outperformed the F150. The F150 came from the factory with Goodyear Wrangler AT/S

I got rid of my Continental tires with 15,000 miles on them. They are the worst tires I have ever owned! I put Cooper STT 35x12.50.18 on and the last snow storm I did not use 4x4 the 2x4 was all I needed. The wet road stopping is better and the loose rear end is gone. Replace them asap and you will not believe how much better the truck handles. My MPG did not change enough for me to notice a difference with larger tires.

'06 F-250SD 4x4:

After only 11,000 miles on my stock Contis, I gave up! The truck handled like crap. The tires looked like crap too - too small and wimpy for a real 4x4. The truck would not get a grip in the rain. Any rain, snow, sand, dirt.... the tires would easily spin out. I had 245/75/17 and replaced with BFG AT 285/70/17. BIG DIFFERENCE! No rub at all, could probably go bigger. The Contis still look new. I kept the Contis thinking I could get a few bucks out of them, man was I wrong. Should have went ahead and paid the tire store the couple bucks to dispose of them. Everyone I talked to about selling the Contis to said 'you could not pay me to take them.'
