2008 Super duty
2008 Super duty
I just saw the new 2008 Super dutys at the dealership next to my work. I must say, what an impressive truck. The exterior is very big and imposing and the headlamp grille combo has grown on me. The twin turbo diesel is crammed into the engine compartment very tightly. Looks like a b***h to work on. Although it is by far the quietest truck diesel I have ever heard. The interior of the one I looked at, F250 Lariat crew cab was gorgeous and very well put together. Dare I say nicer than the F150 interior. One very unusual item I noticed though, the rear section of the frame is not boxed, just open C channel. Only the front section is boxed. Why would they do this when the light duty F150 is fully boxed. So I looked at an '08 F550 chassis cab sitting next to it and it was open C channel as well. Very strange. Sorry no pictures
I saw my first one today too. F-450 dually, two of them actually on a truck with some Lincoln MKX's and a couple Foci. I like the new look, I am going to have to go down and drive one soon. I got some buddies at the dealership.
The reason the frame is not fully boxed is because it simply is not necessary, expecially on a vehicle the size of a F250/350. When's the last time you heard of a frame bending or braking on a street vehicle? Probably never. I'm sure someone will have some BS story about a Dodge or Chevy that snapped in half or some nonsense like that but it will be just that, BS. They will have no pics or proof and will simply say "Ford Rules! All other trucks sucks." There is simply no need for a frame that strong in a light duty truck. Ford did it only as a selling point. Notice that the F150 is the heaviest truck on the market? It's built like a freaking tank (too the point of being overbuilt I think) but in reality, is it necessary? Notice Chevy, Dodge, Toyota & Nissan don't have fully boxed frames & all 4 are a lighter truck. My 91 Chevy (4600lb) was almost a full 1000lbs lighter than my 05 F150 (5500lb). I never once thought my Chevy was under built or weak. To this day, it's the single best vehicle I've ever owned out of a total of 39.

The main reason the frame on the Super Duties isn't completely boxed is because with the loads they're designed to handle, you need some give in the frame otherwise it would crack or even break under the stress if it's too stiff. Big rigs are built with open frames for the same reason.
