Which is why my 7.3L won't be going anywhere for quite some time. $10 for an oil filter, another $10 for the fuel filter, then $35 in oil. Once I get around to getting a regulated return the stock fuel filter will be a memory, so thats less another $10 on maintenance.

Amen brotha.

While back when the walmart was clearin' the shelves of motorcraft brand stuff, FL1A and the 4.6L filters were 3bucks, FL-1995's fer the 7.3L were 7 plus change, and I think the 6.0 filters were 15ish. The 15w40 PSD oil and 5w20 were half price too.

I stocked up

Fuel Filters for about $58.00
have you checked any International dealer? the filters should be around $35USD, I pay $39CDN for the kit. They are OEM filters, here is the IH part #:

1847170C92 (2 filter kit).

The oil filter however was only a few bucks less than Ford, but still cheaper.

I am not sure where there is and International Dealer around me. I am in Southern Ca in the Riverside area. I am sure there is one, just need to locate.

Thanks for all the help gents, I did the oil yesterday. I am still waiting on the fuel filters.

It looks like the one on the frame rail will be messy that is for sure. But the one next to the oil filter will be a breeze. Which brings me to the other question about the water separators. Do the 6.0 have them? If so is there anything I need to do when I change my filter (i.e. Drain it)? I assume there is some way to do this for mere mortals, like myself.

I am looking at the frame rail fuel filter and wondering how you drain and fill back up? I assume you have to just sit there and CRANK it until it fills, but I am not sure. No way to pre-fill it as its a sideway mount.

Any suggestions welcomed.

any thoughts on refilling the cannister with trans fluid? Mechanic recomended it, but I don't know. Wish I had seen this two years ago, I never drain the cannister to change the filter!

Family has two 7.3s and found that New Holland dealers make a good deal on 33 gal drums of 15w40.

Don't put trans fluid in fuel canister. That may have been true 20 years ago, but things change.

So you can get a cheaper price than $8/gal for the New Holland branded oil? I know that even for me its cheaper to go to Walmart for my oil and I can get Case #1 (very similar to NH branded oil) for a lower price than you can (production cost). That stuff is NOT cheap. I know Case #1 oil passes spec for use in a PSD, but I'm not 100% sure on the New Holland oil. I'll have to see if I can pull up the spec sheet on that to see what specs it actually meets.

Wow, seems like alot of people here are paying more to do it themselves then I pay at the dealership. I bought my truck at Riata Ford and they offer 49.99 oil change.

Yeah I am not sure what the price of just and oil change was but it was close to 100 bucks. I have only spent 15 on a filter and 35 bucks on oil so that is not to bad. If Lake Elsinore Ford had a deal like that I would go there.

So any suggestions on the fuel filter change?

$170 /33gal =$5.15 a gallon
If you use it in the tractors and use you truck on the farm it is tax exempt too

I'll have to check the pricing info I had on the Case #1 and see what I can dig up on the NH branded oil. The last I checked it was slightly higher than the Rotella. Though I have a different contact to check with now. They should have quoted me production cost, but might have screwed up and given me either dealer or retail cost. Though even though I do pretty extensive work with New Holland harvesting equipment we don't really ever use the engine oil.

Hello all,

Just a thought, but I would gladly pay the extra money every three months to keep the 7.3L happy, and avoid costly trips to the fixer barn. I agree it is always nicer to get things a little cheaper, but unless we all pay attention to Walmart sales like adrian did, remember pinching pennies on engine maintenance = dollars in repairs.

I would agree, that is why I was doing the maintenance in the first place. But I just can't see paying $87 and change to the dealer when I can get them from International for half that. They shipped them to me, so it was a deal. I was really in no rush.

Plus as you say doing this every 3 to 4 months, you have to find the best deal to make it affordable to enjoy play time, with out having to pinch as many pennies.

Thanks for the reply.

So I changed the filters today; took all of 30 minutes. For a first time that is not to bad, I think. The worst part was the Frame Rail Filter. Dripped a bit of diesel on the frame and had to make sure to clean that off. Don't want to drip that crap all over the drive way.

Not sure if this is mental or reality; but the truck seems to be a bit more responsive now. Not huge, but a little less lag on the accel from a dead stop.

Hey nvrenuff, Thanks for the suggestion on the filter location.

For reference here is the International Part #

Service Kit - Filter Element
Part# - 1847170C92
Cost was $47 and change
