Question with 1990 F250 Diesel

Hi guys I am new here and well, I admit, fairly new to the Ford truck market. But besides that, I came here knowing that you might be able to help me. I am looking to buy a used 1990 Ford F250 Diesel for my business. The problem is that there is a oil leak which I believe is the engine oil and I believe that the engine was rebuilt: not exactly sure though. Now, I was also told by my personal mechanic that the diesel engine made by Ford in this particular year had many problems and that I should not buy it. Is this true? Oh and this truck has a utility bed on the back. Not the flat bed one but the one's you see used by contractors. And the transmission is not a C6. I forgot which one it is. But I need your help? Is it safe to purchase this 250? The seller is asking for $3,500 obo and has about 130K miles on it according to the owner but since it only has 5 digits for the odometer, I can't really know the true miles on it. And the truck has new brakes and tires. The seller is an AC repair shop owner and the vehicle is on the mechanic's lot. The mechanic told me that the has every single service record dating back to when the truck was new. Sorry for the long post.

I don't know much about that configuration, but from your post... I'd have to suggest looking for another one.

Any year of the 6.9L/7.3L IDI diesels are super tough/relyable, but there are a few issues that apply to all IDI's. The antifreeze is very important to be flushed regularly and an SCA additive kept up to date as well. These blocks can eat holes thorugh themselves if the coolant was neglected.

The other possible issue is with the E4OD tranny. Tough unit, but again, if abused, a 2000dollar rebuild. I'd look for at least 2-3 fluid changes in the service records personally.

Also would like to welcome you to f150online, glad you stopped by! Another site I always like is www.oilburners.net The guys and gals in the IDI section can take em apart in their sleep and would have LOTS more info for ya if you post what you did here.

Two questions. What is an IDI? And what is a SCA? Oh and thank you for the warm welcome. The tranny is an E4OD. Not sure if it was rebuilt or not. Oh and the guy tells me that the AC needs to be charged.
