I have a 97 F250 HD Turbo Diesel 7.3 liter 4x4 automatic. The truck runs great but the tranny shifts hard meaning you can really feel the shifting and it is always shifting back and forth. It frequently holds back before it shifts especially from 2nd to 3rd and then will shift suddenly and then go back again into the previous gear. It seems as if it is always hunting for the proper gear. Is this normal of Ford Trannies or does it indicate a rebuild is is in order? The truck has 150K on it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

 

The trans is on its last legs. Be prepared to shell out around $3000+. Don't waste your money on a Ford reman unit as they usually fail in short order. You're better off getting a Suncoast rebuild kit (or full trans), John Woods, or BTS. A BTS will run you around $3500-3800 out the door, but it will be the last trans you'll ever buy. Avoid the Factory Tech Monster Box as its now just an expensive knock off of a Jasper reman unit.
