F250 V8 vs. Diesel Towing Horse Trailer
I'm in the market for a new F250, extended cab, long-bed. I'm also in the market for a Gooseneck Horse Trailer with Livingquarters, roughly 8500 pounds dry trailer wieght, roughly another 3000 pounds worth of horses also.
Is this at all possible to pull with a Gas V8? or is this asking too much for this powerplant and tranny combo?
I would really like to get a diesel but I would like to hear some pros and cons about Gas V8 vs. Diesel.
Everyone that I have come across that pulls horse trailers of this size has a diesel, just cuious to see what yall think.
Thanks for any replys that you guys might have.

It's very possible, but it will be SLOOOOW. If you can afford it and can deal with the extra $$$ of a diesel, then by all means go for it. Remember, overkill is best when towing. If you can't afford the diesel or don't want to deal with it, then your best bet would be the V-10. I would not tow that load with a V-8.
It will do it, we've done bigger in the past with a 300six, but you won't win a speed record. I mean to put it in perspective, doesn't the 5.4L have bigger numbers than the 460 of a few years ago? But you'll love the big diesel that won't bog on the hills as bad.

If you like gas engines, that's a cakewalk job for a 6.8L V10. The V8 will do it but you won't enjoy the performance. Do yourself a favor and test drive a new V10 Superduty with 4.30 gears.
It will certainly pull the trailer easily and get slightly better mileage at the expense of costing an extra $5000 up front for a new one. Right now I prefer gas engines because I can't stomach the extra 600lbs of deadweight the diesel adds over the front axle.

V10 will handle it. V8 will scream on hills. There is some margin for personal preference between the V10 & Diesel. Both will pull it nicely - diesel will use a smaller percentage of its capacity.
I agree with everyone else, you need to go with the diesel if you can afford it. We pull a 3 horse bumper pull (around 6,000 lbs loaded w/ 2 horses and tack) with our 5.4 F250 supercrew and it bogs down quite a bit on hills. I'll definitely go with a diesel when its time to replace the F250.

A diesel is great if you can afford it and deal with the hassles but a V10 (or a big V8) will pull 6000 or 8000 lbs piece of cake.
The mileage is worse but then again the gasser costs about $4500 less to start with and that buys alot of gas.
The point is a diesel is extreme overkill for pulling a 6000# trailer and you can buy a V10 alot cheaper and it will pull that trailer at 10 mph over the speed limit up any highway hill in the country.
I agree a V10 will do the job just fine. I feel that diesels are way over priced these days. Dealers know you want em so they are not dealing. I would even consider getting the V8 as well since it puts out 300 hp now.
And to those guys saying a v8 or v10 will be too slow. how fast you think he gonna be driving pulling a live animal.

Diesel period. If you are going to be towing that much weight OFTEN then you want the diesel. You won't enjoy towing with the V10 and the pethetic gas milage you will get in doing so.
Plus overall when not towing you can easily make the diesel faster that the v10!
