96 super duty
now for my next question...Ford diesel engines before the dawn of the power stroke, early 80s to mid 80's, is this a engine to aviod.?.. A few early 80s Fords with D engines are poping up in my used truck quest...
The 84-87 6.9L IDI is super simple to run and fix and are really trouble free. The 87-94 7.3L IDI is the same with the one little exception that the coolent needed to have proper service intervals and SCA additives to keep the block from eating itself.

All the PSD trucks need the SCA added an maintained. Its not just an IDI thing. The 6.9L though I don't beleive had problems with this. It mainly reared its ugly head with the early 7.3L. The 7.3L IDI engines were decent if the SCAs were maintained, if not then there could be potential block issues as these had FAR greater problems with it than the newer PSD trucks. The 6.9L are decent engines, but I believe it was the injection pumps. Aside from that they're good, but not much for power. Also there is next to nothing that can be done power wise to any of the IDI engines.
