1999 v10 vs. newer models

I recently purchased a 1999 F350 4x4 supercab lwb and love it. I have spent a lot of time on this board reserching everything I can learn about the 6.8L. Mine has 131,000 miles on it, and runs like new. I have seen a few post about HP difference between the 99 models and the newer models. does anyone know why this is? I am getting around 9.7 mpg so far but recently changed the ORIGINAL plugs and havent had a chance to figure it with new plugs. I know one thing, I dont ever want to change them again, it was a b**ch!!! Upgrading from a 98 F150 with a 4.2 it is awesome to drive the v10. I am excited about my new old truck and plan to keep it as long as I can. I was just wanting to get some input from all of you long time and even new v10 owners about pros and cons about your truck. I hope to get a superchip programmer soon and down the road upgrade the intake and exhaust but I have a very limited budget. Anyone have secondhand tuner for sale . Any input will be appreciated.

congrats on your new purchase. I, too am a new owner of an old 99 V-10 4x4 with around the same mileage. I love it as well. Plenty of power, practicality. So far I've changed my plugs, fuel filter, a hose(causing an egr code) and the bulb in my airbag on/off switch(causing airbag code). It's ready to go and I'll be towing with it for the first time this weekend. I'm sure the mileage will stink. The one and only thing that I don't like about the truck is the ride. I'm used to my 02 GMC Z-71 and it's smooth ride, but I bought the truck to work so it's ok.

Congrats on your "new" truck.

The power difference between the '99 and newer models is due to a change in the design of the heads.

When you changed plugs, I hope you used some anti-seize and properly torqued them. Spark plug blow-out is a serious concern, so keep an eye on them. Other than that, there's not a lot of negatives about the V10. I've loved all three of the ones I've owned.

Scott, I was going to say the same thing about the ride. Stiff as hell. I took it to the beach the other day and it beat the crap out of me. I am going to start a new thread in suspension and see what other users have done to soften the ride up a bit.

Nomo I didnt have a torque wrench, now you have me worrying about it. I did dab them with neversieze. Do you think I could get by with loosening them up and retorqueing them to the proper value?

Torquing the plugs now would probably be the right thing to do. But, If it were me, I'd run them a while then check them. I'm lazy like that.
