F-450 Chip?
My father just purchased 2001 f-450 with the powerstroke diesel. I have a superchip in my 5.4 L supercrew and am all and all pleased with it. He is thinking of buying a chip for his. Is the superchip the right one for the diesel or is hypertech better? I would appreciate any comments.

There are lots of different chip makers out there. Some are more for performance and some are for work.
I'm still waiting for things to develop, I'm in no hurry. Throttle response is improved greatly.

CCLA,
I can't wait until November 11th. Thats when we get to beat the hell out of LSU in our house this year. It was pretty fun, beating you all in Baton Rouge, but beating you in Oxford, WOW, it's going to be great!

Hi Bart,
If you want, give us a shout with the computer code of that 2001 PSD, as we have completed the chassis dyno work on the 2001 Powerstroke, so we may already have your code done.

On the Superdutys, the code is on the drivers door
You will also find the computer on the drivers side. Just look near the emergency brake and it's to the left of it. I ended up not putting the cover back on mine because it just didn't fit w/the chip in place (unless you want to do some cutting on the cover) I figured that if I ever needed to pull the chip for service, then I could just replace the cover then.

Hi Bart,
I'm sorry, I thought you already knew where to get the code, oops!
Simply open the driver's door, and look in the front part of the door frame, in the general area of the door hinges. There will be a white sticker with 3 letters and 1 number on it, and that is your computer code for that vehicle. As Tina mentioned, the Super Duty trucks generally have their code sticker in the driver's door frame near the door hinges, as opposed to where it is on the F-150's & light-duty F-250's, which is in that same location but over on the passenger side. Just so you'll know, we are not talking about the sticker on the back of the driver's door that says "Calibration" on it, that isn't the code we need.
With regards to the fitment issue of getting the black plastic cover back on the computer with the Superchip installed in Super Duty trucks, this is easily done about 80% of the time, but in those cases where you have to put too much pressure on that part to re-install the 2 7mm screws that hold it in place, we include a set of slip ties to replace the 2 7-mm screws that normally hold the cover in place, so that it can be re-installed properly.
Tina, let me know if you want me to send you those slip ties to replace the 7 mm screws for your cover.

Mike: great idea w/those zip-ties. No need to send any, I've plenty in the garage. Actually, I think I'll just leave it the way it is, you know the ol saying: if it's not broke.....unless keeping the cover off is harmfull to the computer???? Thanks anyways
Hi Tina,
I saw how you have yours when we were at the Rally in July of course, and no, I don't see anything wrong with that, it's easier access!
That will not harm anything at all. We simply provide the black slip ties so those people that have a fitment issue can still replace the black cover and have it look neat.
So there's no reason to change unless you want to, basically.

Hey Bart,
I have what's called a "hot" superchip in my 99 PSD and let me tell you this chip kicks serious a$$! I've never had it dyno'ed but it claims to knock the HP up to about 300 and torque to over 600 and by the way it drives I believe it, If I stomp on the gas it will burn out for as long as I want to hold it. My 6000+ pound truck has yet to be beat by anything in it's class and will beat just about anything short of something along the lines of a Mustang GT. I've had the chip for over a year and haven't noticed anything negative yet but the guys on the diesel forum suggest you shouldn't use it to tow heavy loads unless you have at least an aftermarket gauge to monitor exhaust heat. I'll be selling my truck in about 4-5 months due to my need to get a 2001 lightning, if I trade it in I'll be selling the chip for about 300 bucks ( I paid 450). I almost forgot to mention one of the nicest things about the chip is it eliminates the sluggishness of the powerstroke and makes it drive more like a gasser.

Adam, you can just keep the chip and get it reflashed for the new truck. Lots cheaper that way..

My understanding of Superchips and reflashing is....Say your code is ABC2 and Ford decides for some reason that your computer needs to be reflashed. Then your code usually goes to ABC3. It's like the same code but updated. Superchips will reflash your chip to match your computer. BUT I don't think this chip can be reflashed to a completely different code like XYZ3. (or if they can do it, it's not cheap) Most people that sell their chip, need to advertize it's code so as to find another truck w/the same code. Your chances of buying a new truck w/the same code is slim. There's also a difference in codes from year to year. (hopefully I've got this right, if not Mike will straighten it out)
Hi Tina,
You made some good points, as usual!
If it's a Superchip for an F-150, then it can usually be reprogrammed for another F-150, but that is not free, so that is why when you go looking for a bargain on a used Superchip for example, it needs to exactly match your computer code so you don't incur a reprogramming fee, otherwise you'd just be better off financially buying a new one.
A Superchip for a Powerstroke diesel can be reprogrammed for another Powerstroke diesel, but you can't take a Superchip for an F-150, and reprogram it for either a V-10 or a Powerstroke diesel, as they take a different module.
I hope that makes it just a little bit clearer than mud!
