Wait time for a SD order
Hey gang, I may be worrying about this too early, but maybe not. What I'm wondering is how long is the wait when you order a SD?
The RC Lease on my 150 ends in April 2001. I had been thinking of placing my order in Janurary of 2001 so it would arrive on time for the lease end.
I will be ordering an F-250 XLT 4X2 SD Supercab 142" WB with the V-10/Auto/4.3 LS combo Dk. Blue with brown Captains seats, LT 265 tires, loaded, power seat, keyless, tape/cd combo, tow pkg. telecscope tt mirrors.
What is everyones opinion on when abouts I should make the order.

You are 13 months from your lease running out. I'd place an order 6 months before the lease runs out.
When I ordered mine, it took 5 months for it to arrive, but I've had it for 16 months now.
I've seen posts on this site regarding delays if you order a V-10 (I understand the reason was the V-10 production was going into the more profitable Excursion). That problem should be solved.
If your new truck arrives before your lease expires, I bet your friendly lease person would not have problems swapping you into a new lease (just a guess - I never lease because of all the "fine print" in the contracts
)
Good Luck. Your SD sounds a bit like mine...

Hey J-C, thanks for some advice. I'd wish I'd got the SD when I picked this truck out. More truck for the $$$.
I noticed on your page yours is the crew cab long box. How easy do you find it, with the tt mirrors, to move through a parking lot. The full size back seat might be handier for hauling the fam. up to the lake, while towing the snowmobiles behind (I'm a Northerner)

I LOVE my CC
There is a lot of rear-seat leg-room. The family would really like that.
(Actually more room in back seat with front all the way back than in the front seat!!!
This is my FIRST truck and it is 23 feet long! It took a bit getting used to the length (ran over a few curbs in parking lots) but now I am sure to turn wide. (Hurray for Power Steering!)
I have found that since land costs so much in Southern California, that they make their parking lots and spaces really small. I take up FOUR of what they call "Compact" spaces.

It mostly depends on your dealers allotments!
Choose your dealer carefully and you can get your truck in the 8 to 16 week range.
Dealers that don't have good allotments are causing folks to wait up to 6 months for their trucks..
Lately they (FoMoCo) seem to be getting them out a little quicker, but I've heard rumors on other forums that they're going to stop taking orders for Y2K models pretty soon now.
It used to be that the V10 was causing slightly longer delays on average, but that has passed and is not the bottleneck now.
But the key factor between some folks getting trucks sooner than others, always boils down to 'does your dealer have allotments for the particular truck your ordering'
If they don't, then goto a different dealer..

Jeff,
I ordered my 250SD-4x4-CC-Lariat-Tow Package on 3 Oct 99 and recieved it (at home) on 3 Jan 00. The truck was actually at the railyard the week between Christmas and New Years; however, the drivers (transport company) to dealers were on vacation that week. When you order make sure you ask the dealer to tag it as high priority. Each dealer has a quota and priority system by which Ford builds/delivers units. Also, once you order, press the dealer to get a VIN #. You can also call the Ford Vehicle Order Processing Center (VOPC)and check the order status yourself.

altec,
The VOPC is closed to non-dealers.. FoMoCo has instructed forum owners (like those of www.ford-diesel.com ) to remove any reference to the VOPC number..
Rumor has it that they've also put a password on the VOPC system.. in any case, the proper channel is to go through your local dealer for your truck status.. (at which time they will contact the vopc)..

jtruesdell: are you ording the new truck to lease or keep??? If to keep, think about ording a diesel!!! I went with the crew cab because of my kids getting bigger. Ordered it and was driving it in about 7 weeks
But like R Bess said, make 100% sure that your dealer has the allocation to order your truck and that when he gets the DORA you check the priority # (10 is a good number!!) Driving the Crew cab is great, just have to watch those turns. Parking is a bear!! At my dentist office; he's got the fancy, some cars parked one way then others at 90 degrees to that. I take two spots and block one of the 90 degree spaces! It's a big truck
I didn't get the TT mirrors but did order the power reg mirrors. Reason was because the truck w/TT mirrors was just too wide to go into my garage. Take the whole family to test drive a CC and a SC and then ask their opinions of that back seat!!!

dlb,
Which dealership did your boss use? I'm just curious.. I got my SD in 7+ weeks from Capital Ford.. The other dealers in the area (crossroads and university ford) had no allotments for anything other than diesel supercabs when I was buying, they estimated at least 16 weeks to get a gasser..
This was back in November, the allotments have probably changed several times since then.

I'm going to be keeping this one that's why I'm ordering it. When I bought the 99, it was a quick fix and I took what they had. And I've never liked the psd price tag. I just can't reason with the extra cash I'd have to have to pay for it. Now that I've tried the RCL I think I prefer to own it, that way I'm paying to own it, not to give it back.

Anyone know of a way to find a local dealers priority number. I've got a local Lincoln/Mercury dealer that says he'd do the deal through his Ford dealer to keep my families business. So do I need to know the Ford Dealers rating or the Mercury dealers rating?

I have been waiting since the first of January for three of them that I ordered for my work. No word yet. Darn that State purchase fleet sales agreement as I have seen many on the local lots that match these three since.
My boss took a delivery of the same truck you want (except he got a stick) in the last week of February. His order took 9 weeks. . .

jtruesdell: I simply asked my dealer if he had the "allocation" to order "my" truck. You don't find out the priority # until after the order is put in. I've been hearing over on the ford-diesel board that alloctions for the SD is getting really tight. That soon Ford will be cutting them off and then Ford will start up the allocations for the 2001 models.
I just went back and reread your first post and you're actually wanting a 2001. I ordered in Nov and got mine the first of Jan. So maybe plan for around Nov-Dec time frame ordering and you most likly wont have any problem. Just don't forget to confirm the alloction when you order. Asking a dealer now if he's got allocations for later wont help you none. Just wait until then.

Thanks Tina. I'm dying to get the truck even though I've got to wait until next April. I thought about a 7700 truck but it costs a tad more! Now that don't add up when the 250 is a helluva lot more truck! So there was no thinking there, just gotta start widening the garage
