Rear Axle Question
I have a 2000 F-250 Crew Cab SB with the 5.4, 5 speed, 4.10 L/S, and 4 wheel drive. Is the rearend on this truck a semi-floating or a full-floating design?

It's a full floater. Take off a rear hub cab and look at the HUGE hub. Aint it purty? |
Ya'll got me curious.. Whats the difference between a 'full floating' design and the semi-floating?

All I know is that it's got to do with how the weight is carried by the axle, I think the full floater the weight is carried by the bearings.

On a full floater the weight of the truck is carried on the axle housing, with a semi-floater it's carried on the axles.
If you break an axle on a semi floater make sure you hold on because the axle will come out of the housing and the wheel will go with it. I saw a picture of it once and it looked pretty kewl. |
Full floaters are awesome! The weight is carried by the bearings like J.C. said. There are two, approx 3" diameter bearings on each side of the axle. On a regular axle, there is one bearing on each side. This bearing has to carry the weight and center the axle shaft in the axle tube.

go pull the center cap off your wheel...all those bolts around the hub hold the axle in. Pull the bolts and pull the axle and make a trailer out of it ;-)
In terms of breaking a semi-floating axle and it coming out was really only a problem on rearends where the axle was C-clipped in(very common on GM products).
