Question Anyone replace the stock muffler with something louder?

I have a 2000 F-250 Crew Cab, 5.4, short box. I'd like to upgrade my exhaust, but can't afford a full stainless, or any cat-back at this time.

The question is this, has anybody replaced their stock muffler, using existing pipe, (at least between the cat and muffler) with something that sounds a bit better, such as a Flowmaster? I love my truck but I pulled up next to an 5.4 F-150 (no offense to any 150 owners!) yesterday, and his sounded soooo nice when he pulled away from the light, and it looked like a stock system!

Any suggestions, tips, tricks, etc. etc. would be appreciated!

Go ahead and go for it!! You have the V8 so you'll get good sound. You should have 3" tubing. Pick out a muffler and have it installed.

Question

V10 man -Any particular suggestions?

I've been reading other posts on the message board, and am thinking about a Flowmaster 40 or 50 series with 3" pipe following the factory routing out the side...

Any suggestions or insight are appreciated!

Ike,

Bring your truck to an exhaust shop and have them put a cat back dual exhaust system on your truck. I would suggest that you put a simple glass pack with this. The combination sounds excellent on the 5.4 with that combo. Should run you $200 - $250 completely installed.

Thumbs up

Ike: On my other truck, I had the 40 series flowmaster cat-back installed by Mineiki (excuse the spelling) They were really cheap so check them out in your area too. (I really miss that sound and would love to have it on my new truck but.....I think the clatter-clatter would just drown it out )

Ike,
I've followed many posts from V10 owners trying to find an exhaust system that sounds like a V8. There is no such thing! The V10 has completely different firing timing. No pipe / muffler combination will make it sound like a V8.
Enjoy the sound of your V10 - it is UNIQUE. Mine turns heads without even going WOT. I have an automatic tranny and I love the little "snarl" sound the engine makes when upshifting at throttle.

Ike,

I have never really cared much for Flowmasters although a lot of folks here use them. I looked over at a-1performance.com. This is what they listed. Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers(17792, 17793) are $69. Race Magnums are $72(17220, 17221, straight through design) They also sell kits. Dual rear exit next to the hitch. Super Turbos are $260 and Race Magnum kits are $299. So, for about $100 you should be able to buy a muffler and have a shop install it.

I had originally installed a Dynomax Superturbo on my 96 D*dge (with a custom cat back dual setup). It was really not much louder than stock. After a month, I had it removed.

The Super Turbo is a quiet performance muffler. The Race Magnum should be louder being straight through.
