Talking Sandbaggin' in Here

Hey guys, Been sandbaggin' on this sight for over a year now. As I just ordered my '00 F250 SD XLT 4X4 V10 Super Cab SWB, I figured it was time to register. I have always owned ford vehicles and feel I get the best value from them. Current vehicle is a '93 F150 XLT 4X4 Super Cab 5.0L. Only regret has been the lack of horsepower from the 5.0L. This has been a great truck so far until this week (clutch going). Figure the F150 is feeling hurt about the F250 and wants to get back at me. So... I wanna thank all those who posted F250 SD info. It really helped when decision time came. Only thing that surprises me is that Ford only put a 29 gallon tank in the 250 SD. Current truck carries close to 40 Gals. in two tanks. And yes I have the fuel system "check valve problem".
Thanks again,
nailer

You have the shorter wheel base, meaning smaller gas tank. I dont think the earlier F150s carried 40 gallons. I think it was 30.

Nailer: have you got a build date and an estimate of when you should be getting your new truck?? Mine's made it to being loaded on a train so barring any derailments or strikes should be here in a week or two. Total of 2 months wait time from order to cranking it up (I hope) Have you got a VIN # yet???

Don't have a VIN yet, but do have the dealer # and the order #. Dealer said to expect delivery around 15 April. 4-1/2 months seems long, but expected it. The SWB has a 29 gal. tank, what's in the LWB. And it is a fact the '93 F150 XLT Supercab SWB has 19.2 gals in front tank, and 18.3 gals. in rear. As I drive 62 miles each way to work everyday fuel load is important to me. Gonna probably put in a secondary in-bed tank on the new one. Funny part about it is that the 302 int the F150 gets 9-11 MPG. While I am expecting 12-14 MPG in the new F250 SD V-10. Less load vs HP I guess.

You must have a heavy foot!!! My 93 2wd gets a constant 19.56mpg@75mph. You can fit almost 40gallons in a shortbed? My longbed holds at most 33-35 gallons. I guess it depends on how low you run your tanks empty. My old 89 302 gets about 14-15, and it fills the same way...

Guess I do have a heavy foot. Hehe. The 4x4 dosent help. My clutch problem turned out to be a non-issue. Checked the fluid level and was low. Filled it and now everything is working good again. Glad it was simple, as I don't have a garage and snow is forcast this week.

I have 162,000 on the F-150 now. Getting 9-10 MPG. Best I ever got was 14 MPG. Motor is gettin' tired has some blow-by, needs a replacement EGR valve, needs tires, shocks and an alignment. Just hoping to get it by till the new SD gets here

In response to your earlier question, the LWB SuperDuty has a 38 gallon tank...it was the main reason I switched my order from SWB to LWB. I have had my truck three weeks now and have not calculated fuel mileage yet. I am planning to do that with the next fillup. I have 302 miles on the current tank and the needle is showing right at 1/4 tank left. I am going to take a two gallon gas can and drive it until it runs out! Hoping to be able to get 400 miles before it does. Will post results tomorrow or Wednesday.

Trucking4: driving all the gas out is NOT a good thing to do for your engine! Maybe get it really low and be satisfied with that???

Tina,

I know that it is not good for the truck to run it out of gas because supposedly the debris that sits at the very bottom of the tank will go through the lines. I was assuming that since the truck is brand new that there would not yet be any debris in the tank. I also know that once the engine of a fuel injected vehicle does cut off due to running out of gas that you do NOT want to try to start it or the injectors will have to be primed ($800). Other than those two, are there any other reasons it would harm the vehicle to run out of gas? It's not like I'm going to do it every tank! I just wanted to do it one time to see approximately how far I really have after the fuel light comes on.

Anyhow, after today's driving I have 411 miles on the current tank and the fuel light came on at 375 miles, went off, and came on again at 384 miles.

FYI -
I have driven 75 miles after the "Low Fuel" light came on - was planning on going further but the wife kept beating on me...
Anyway, when I filled it it only took 32 gallons.
That's the most I've ever put in it. My guage stays at "1/4" for a long time. It looks like I should be able to go 150 miles with the Low Fuel light on and still have a gallon or so left...
Good Luck!

Well, my results are in! After driving 453.4 miles I decided against letting it run completely out. Went to a gas station with brand new pumps hoping they would be most accurate. Result was 38.001 gallons @ $1.20 per gallon! I was either on fumes only or this tank is slightly larger than 38 gallons? Average MPG comes to 11.93...thats about 80% city driving. $45.56 was the most I've ever spent at a gas station! Won't be doing that again until I take a roadtrip so I can see how far I can get on a tank driving all highway miles. Wawii claims to have gotten 406 miles on a 29 gallon tank so I'm sure I could get at least 510-520. No trips planned any time soon.

Added on edit: Fuel light came on and needle hit "E" at 375 miles, which means I drove 78 miles afterwards.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT!

I would not advise going that low on fuel. In-tank fuel pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel.

Some pumps only come as assemblys with the fuel gauge. $$$$$$$$$$$

If it is anything like the Che*y, it's cheaper and easier to pull the bed off rather than pull the tank out. The Ch**y tank sits 3" from the bottom of the bed. Especially if the tank is full. No easy way to empty them with a bad pump. Check valves in the tank, prevent air from being put in to pressure out the fuel.
