Question New Super Duty V10 or V8?

I'm looking for a little input as it is time to think about ordering the new truck. What I'd like to know is what kind of mileage everyone is getting with the V10 and the V8. I don't plan on pulling anything but the idea of the V10 puts a smile on my face if the mileage dosen't take it right off. What I'm thinking of is a F250 Superduty 4x4 Supercab shortbed. I also plan to put a small lift on the truck to make it sit level and plan on using 33x12.5x16.5 tires and 16.5 wheels. Can you give me an idea of which rear end gear to use so as to offset the increase in tire size. Any info any of you members can give me would greatly be appreciated. Thanks...

Thumbs up

I have a V-10 with 4.30 Limited Slip rear.
I tow 12K pound trailer and mileage drops to 9 when towing. I've gotten as high as 14.5 running without a load. Overall mileage since new is 12.4 MPG.
If you are worried about mileage, get a Honda.
I love my V-10
I also believe that the gasoline V-8 may be a fine engine for a F-150 but is too small for a Super Duty. If you're really partial to V-8, get the Power Stroke 7.3l V-8.

I got rid of a F250 SD w/5.4 and would definitly recommend the V10. The truck is a whale is was gutless even without a load, and I was getting the same mileage as a V10.
I had the 230 horse version , maybe the 260 5.4 is better though.

Now Now !!

The 5.4 is plenty with the SD. If your gonna tow, now that's alot of difference. How many people really tow that often? How many lie about it?

The 260HP will be fine. but the V10 is a CHEAP 50HP !

Unhappy

I too am having a similar problem. I want the power of the V10, the sound of the V8, but I don't want the maintenance and additional costs of the PSD, at least I don't think I do! All I need to do is pick an engine, I have the rest of the truck picked out exactly! It's especially tough since the new V10's have more guts! HELP!

DU302: the engine was the easy part for me to pick on my new truck 6speed powerstroke $3910 My husband is a diesel mechanic so no worries there. The hard part for me was the color!! I wanted some kind of metallic red but not dk toreador red. I finally picked woodland green!!

yetiman: what will you be doing with the truck? You said you dont plan on pulling anything. So which ever gas engine you get should get near the top of it's fuel milage estamate. Remember, it's still a full size super duty truck, the milage will never be great.

Tina,

It's mainly gonna be a daily driver and hunting rig. To be honest with you I'm not overly worried about the gas mileage I was just trying to get some kind of idea about what I could expect from the two.

yetiman, I have a Y2K SD F-250 4X4 SC with a short box and a V-10. I ordered my truck with the snowplow package and it sits level right from the factory. The camper package may have this same front end capacity though.
I think that you may be able to put those tires on it without a lift. I can't figure why you would dump the 16" wheels though. There is a real good selection of tires for 16s now. I'm not criticizing you, just asking. I'd buy the V-10 again in a minute. It gives you great performance, especially considering the weight of the SD trucks. This truck is a bit harder on fuel than my 99 4.6 F-150 was, but not a lot worse. It sounds a bit different, but you can sure tell it's not a V-8.

I too debated this issue a long time.. I finally went with the 5.4L 5sp 4.10LS rear and am 100% happy with the choice.

I've hauled over 1000lbs in the bed on grades greater than 6% and didn't have to shift out of overdrive.

A few additional comments:
- with the 4.10 rear, it keeps the 5.4 in a good RPM range at 55-70 mph its between 2100-2400 rpms.
- The manual tranny is more effient than an automatic, so more of the HP is going to the ground.
- The OD on the manual tranny is .76 (higher) vs the .72 overdrive gear in the auto, thus allowing just a bit higher RPM again which helps the 5.4.

I'm averaging over 15 mpg mixed driving, but the engine's not completly broke in yet.

However, I think I would recommend to you the V10.
In your case, your getting 4x4 vs 4x2 (more weight) and larger tires.. The larger tires will offset the 4.30 gearing. From other V10 mpg posts, I would expect you to average 12/13 mpg mixed driving.. only 1 or 2 less than the 5.4, AND you'll have the power!!!

I have the 2000 SD 4X4 Supercab, 3.73, Automatic, 285/75/16 Big Foot XT Tires with the 5.4. On the first 1000 miles I am only getting about 11 - 12 MPG in town driving with a little freeway driving using Unleaded gas. I don't really drive with a lead foot either. I still need to have the speedo recalibrated due to going from the stock 235/85's to the 285/75's, only a 3.6% difference in size though.

11-12 mpg? Thats seems awful low. Should be more though when it breaks in.
