Post Is your V10 noisy?

My V10 makes noise that almost makes it sound like a diesel. I'm just trying to figure out if this is normal or not. The motor only has 500 miles on it. It only does it when I load the motor a bit. Like under moderate acceleration. Please share you thoughts with me. Thanks

Ricky

Ricky,
My Y2K f250 SD with the 5.4L has the same sound at the same time (moderate acceleration). Basically the 2 engines are the same except the V10 has 2 more cylinders.

My first thought was a light detonation, but I've tried 89 octane fuel and the sound stayed the same, no worse, no better.

Im planning to test drive another truck at the dealer to see if it makes the same sound.. If its 'normal' I'm not to worried about it, but if its not, then I'll have something done.

Someone else on the edmunds forum also is hearing this as well (with the 5.4L)

If the noise is louder when it cold and first started, you'll be wanting Ford to give you a new engine, because it is probably piston slap. The 5.4 have had piston slap since the beginning, but the 6.8, this is some rather new.

Hey Ricky,
I just drove my 2000 f-350 w/ v-10 808 miles home from the dealer, I had the same noise also. I was alittle concerned, but when I got home I talked to my boss who has a 99 w/ V-10 and he has the same noise, so I would say it is normal.

p.s. keep us informed on the vortech r&d

You can see what I have below.

But yes my V10 is noisy. I was not sure if it was normal either. I dont remeber the noise when I test drove the '99. But then again I drove an S10 before this and it was the opposite, there was no engine to make noise
And this was one reason I was giving everybody when they ask, "why didn't you get the powerstroke?".

Oh well I can live with it, I love my new truck.

Thanks guys! I feel a little better since it's not just my truck. I heard it when I test drove it. I looked at the dealer and gave him that "What the #@%!" look. He told me that all of the V10's sound that way and not to worry. I just wanted to get some other ideas. I'm almost dead positive it's not spark knock. I know pretty well what that sounds like. Thanks again for the help and I will keep you guys posted on supercharger R&D. It should only be a couple of months before it's ready.

My '99 V10 has a kind of quite type of noise upon light acceleration and I always thought it sounded like a diesel too! After a little research though, it's actually the sound that the 10 cylinders make in their particular firing order. 10 cyls do sound different than a v8. At least that was the source of my sound.

I have a 00 Model 250 with the V-10 built 11/99. Mine is as quite as my Chyrsler Town & Country mini-van. I would think noise like that would indicate a problem with a gas engine.

My 99 CC was quieter than my Chrysler Imperial
I sold the Imperial

The "noise" I really like happens when my auto tranny upshifts with WOT - kind of a "snarl"

I was told that the reason the V10 sounds "Different" is because of the closeness in time between the cylinders firing. On a V8 a cylinder fires every 45 degrees. But on a V10 it fires every 36 degrees. I drove one yesterday and noticed that it definetly sounds different than a V8 but who cares ya got a V10!! Personally If I had a V10 I'd Love the sound
