The E4OD is common to break for starters. On the engine the CPS is a standard failure item. Aside from that one revision of the rubber boot for the air intake was prone to failure so there is an update kit. Glow plugs and glow plug relays are also a common item as well. For fuel economy if you have 4.10s plan on about 15-16mpg average, and upwards of 19-20 if you have 3.55 gears. Now keep in mind that all the trucks are different and this is just a ball park figure. Aside from those things they're pretty good trucks. I looked at buying one of those before I bought my 99. The biggest things to check on when looking at the truck is to pull the intake line off the turbo and check to see if it was dusted (dust getting sucked into the turbo), the supplemental coolant addative levels (prevents cavitation), and then make sure that the maintenance was kept up on it. The dusting and the SCA levels are the 2 most important things since if those were neglected it can mean a new engine is in that trucks future.
