dhouck, if you are such a die hard Dodge man (and I've seen enough of your posts to know that you are) then why are you so active on this Ford site? You push the Dodge product and the Cummins engine every chance you get. Does Dodge have a truck website like this?
I only push the dodge and the cummins because I had better luck with them.I have had a lot of fords I had some good fords and some bad ones. my cummins is a better engine than any engine I ever had in any of my fords.I would say for durability the cummins is just as good as the PSD. The cummuns you talked about that were junked how many miles were on them ? how were they taken care of ? how often was the oil changed ? If not taken care of the PSD will also blow up . And for towing and just plain driving around town or on trips the cummins works very well. Also the 2004 dodges are worth taking a look at and even driving.The are a lot better than the older ones. My 04 rides and handles alot better than my 97. Dodge has come a long way over the last couple years
I have seen Dodges with Cummins junked after 150,000 miles. Also, I just don't believe that 90-95% of everybody that ever bought a PSD maintains it as thoroughly as you're supposed to. But, then again, these people have sense, they are Ford drivers. 
Also, the Cummins 600 is completely untested, it has three-injections-per-powerstroke, a completely new computer, altogether 43 major design upgrades from last year's Cummins, and it has only been out for 8 months. I wouldn't exactly call that bulletproof until it has a little time to tell us what it's going to do. Now way can it be called durable.

I'm sure that you have seen cummins with only 150,000 miles junked. But the same can also be said for the PSD. It has also had its problems.You can call the cummins durable even if it has had 43 updates it is still the same basic engine. It has just been improved for better fuel mileage and more power.I'm not saying it is better than the ford.They both have had there problems,But they are also overcoming there problems. They both make good engines and good trucks
The only thing that the Cummins has in common with the first Cummins that came out is the block, it has gone through many changes. 43 were just last year, that's not every year, they've even made the transition from 12v to 24v, and that's a very major change in engine design. I'm also sure that the PSD has had it's problems, too, but it has a success rate of well over 90%, and that's including the problems with the 6.0 at it's initial launch. I haven't seen anything that says that Cummins comes close to that.

The Dodge may have gotten better, but Ford still out sells them and GM together. Now either there are a lot of stupid buyers or Ford is doing something right. I must say that we have owned 4 F-150's all for about 2yrs each and have had very few problems. I was worried about the Lightning because it was chipped but she was ok. Now I have a '05 F-350 coming and from what I've been reading these trucks have there share of problems. Hope they got it together this year. Never had a diesel and hope to have a good experence with it

You also can't really look at just the engines compared to each other. If the Cummins was available in the Ford with the Torqueshift behind it, you'd see 1 year waiting lists for them!
Decided auto vs. manual. If auto look at the tranny issues and you'll find the TS is the right way to go although Dodge is getting better, buit still not there. If manual, now you're back to swquare one, but if you'll actualy work the truck, the Dodge has the edge with a manual.

I never said ther was a lot of stupid ford buyers. I think ford makes a fairly good truck,but like anybody else they do make some lemons.Dodge got a bad name years ago with some of the problems they had. And they are just starting to out grow it. Even with the trouble I had with fords I still purchased them out of loyality and family tradition. When ford came out with the super duty in 1999 they had plans of using a cummins 5.9 diesel as an option. I had planned to order one when they first came out and in the books it said my options was 7.3 PSD,or late avalibility 5.9 cummins. I have no clue as to what happend to those plans. I also agree that with a dodge the manual is the way to go. Even with towing a 16 foot trailer with a mini backhoe on it my dodge can haul these pa hills with no problems it flys up them with out downshifting from 6th. gear.
