HELP... Need Trailer Wiring Directions

I am installing a 4 flat wiring connector to my 99F250 SD. It has the 7 pin with the brake assist, but the trailer is small and uses a flat 4. I wired it to the existing flat 4 (different connector) and I spliced the aft mkt truck end into the factory wires, color for color. When I hooked the trailer up the running lights work, the turn signels work, but when I hit the brake, the lights go OFF. WHY?

HELP.. Need to tow this weekend!

Justin

The link that Yankee7985 posted is a good one. We have 3 trailers we use and they all have different connectors for them. That site was the one I used to make sure mine were wired right. We have the following connectors utilizing the 7 pin plug
1-4 pin Jet ski and boat trailers
1- 6 pin on a car hauler..rectangular one that unusual
1- 7 pin on neighbors big flat trailer we borrow

Check your grounds and make sure they are good also. It seems like common sense that the lights will work if I have a ground. We had all sorts of problems with a 6 pin with E brakes. We tried everything and the lights would go off when pressed also, running lights were bright instead of dim etc etc. I finally was testing some wires and grounded the trailer to my bumper and the trailer lights worked as should. It seems the factory ground wire wasnt enough to do the job alone. We added a secondary ground to the truck side harness and trailer side with a bullet connector in the middle and it cured the problem. Its just a thought to look at..... A few others have had this issue on the boards also.

Buying an adapter is the easiest way and check to make sure everything is grounded right. When grounding is broke, the lights will do strange things. I couldn't figure out why my brake lights did not work, turn signals worked but were a dim, sometimes the lights just died, etc.. found the it was a broken ground wire at the ground lug on the trailer hitch.
