SD tire size question

My Dad left me his 02 F350 (SRW) V10 4x4 to put new tires on while he is on vacation this week. It has 265/75/16s on it stock.

I was thinking of going w/ either 285/75/16 or 305/70/16 in BFG ATs. Does anyone have recomendations or comments on either of these tires sizes? Both of these sizes have a 32.8 diameter. Would the wider 305s have any rubbing issues?

thanks,
36

Go with the 295/75/16 BFG's ATs. You should upgrade your rims to 8" as well.

Dad wants new tires, NOT new tires AND wheels.

Would the 305/70/16 have any issues fitting on the truck or the wheel?

Will Dad beat the crap out of you if you mess up his speedometer/odometer and effective gearing?

No. I told him the speedometer would be a little off, and the V10 has PLENTY of power to handle the increased tire size.

Personally, I wouldn't go any bigger than the 285s on the stock rims. Anything bigger than that and the rim is narrower than the tire manufacturers recommended specs.

Thanks JDMnAR. I thought about wheel width after I posted yesterday and found that the 305 specs are for at least an 8 inch wheel.

I ordered the BFG ATs in 285/75/16 yesterday from Sears and I am out the door w/ Road Hazard for $756. I just have to wait for them to come in now.

Smart move...the smaller width will wear better, NOT even to mention the liability issues...

If you have a Sam's Club locally - you might check their pricing and get Sears to match it. I think my local club had the BFG ATs in that size for about $150/tire. Don't know how much Sears is per tire, but might save you a little bit.

Your dad must be one trusting guy. My dad would never trust me to put tires on his 350. He knows he'd never be able to climb up in it again.

Neither would mine, he's convinced himself it was me that stole his last set.

Not true, by the way.
I swiped his battery but, that's another thread.

I got Sears to price match Sam's other store - Wal Mart. Wally World has them for $160.24 and $9.76 for mounting, balancing, AND road hazard/per tire. (The nearest Sam's is 20-25 miles away).

unfortunatley the lift kit wasn't included in the deal, or he would have to use a step ladder to get in and out!

While we're on the subject Raoul, do you need a set of 265/75/16 Firestone Steeltex tires w/ ~30,000 miles on them?

I just bought tires three weeks ago.
I was going to ride my factory tires until the next State Inspection but I had to go to Fort Drum NY and everybody talked about the impending snow like it was the boogeyman.
I got scared and bought some Michelins after everybody pointed at my four Maypops and laughed.

Sounds like your deal is done.
Just FYI> I'm running 295/75/16 BFG AT/KO on stock alloy wheels and every now and again they rub slightly with wheel turned all the way to lock. They have unexpectedly worn even on the 4x4SD. It does have the offroad and camper package also with no aftermarket lift.

I'm contemplating the 305/70/16 when these are worn out but gonna try the ProComp ATs next.
