newbie ?'s

I posted this in the towing forum but thought I might need to put hit here also.

Good morning all. I am new to this board and have questions about my recently purchased 99 EB Expedition.

I own a 93 Cobra that I show and race. As I stated above my wife and I recently purchased an Expedition. It has a 5.4 and 3.31 rearend. I know that it will tow my car without any problems but it did not come with a towing package.

My questions are:

1st) Is it feasble to buy the auxillary trans cooler and lines that came factory equipped on f-150's and/or expeditions to install on mine. Where can I buy it? I have not found a place as of yet to buy this item. I have received a price for the receiver and 7 pin connector.

2nd) What type of rearend is in the Expeditions. I am pretty sure mine does not have the trak-loc and I want to buy a trak-loc carrier for my expo so that I can install it.

For the tranny cooler you could try one of the vendors on this board. I don't know if I would go with a "factory" one or not since there is usually a better made one out there, probably for less money. Also for the rear diff, if you are going to mess with it you might as well put in a 3.73 or at least a 3.55. The 3.31 diff that you have does limit your towing somewhat, although it is great for the interstate.
Good luck and welcome to the board.

I will consider that but I figure the most I will be towing including the trailer is around 4300lbs. What is involved in calibrating the speedo if I change the gearing.

Going from 3.30's to 3.73's will be nice shot in the arm. These trucks are heavy. The lower diff really helps them to get going. I know our '97 Expy had 3.73's. It was a nice ratio. Our '00 however has the 3.55's. Not alot of difference off the line since it has 260hp vs 235hp of the'97. The difference is in towing and on the freeway. Towing sucks. The truck hunts around for the right gear alot more. Even on the freeway, kickdown is not as crisp. BTW I think the dealer can change the speedo. Not sure though. Oh one other thing. Fuel mileage was better with the 3.73's, go figure.

235? All the literature I have shows the 99 having 260hp and 345-350tq.

Before we bought this one I test drove another 99 that had 3.73's. I agree that it feels much better but I am not sure if I want to step up that gear ratio since I will only be towing 5-6 times a year

I have a 2000 Expo 5.4 with 3.73's and factory tow package, you should have bought my truck !! In all honesty, for how much you are towing, I would not waste your money on anything, maybe a trans cooler, maybe.... But I tow a 3500 lb boat behind my truck, so the gears and limitied slip help me get out of the water, especially on those slippery launch ramps. And the cooler is a must for me too because I have a heavy foot and my friends do too, so when we race to the river, especially through the desert, I am sure that thing will help me. I take my boat out often too, at least twice a month. If you are only towing a little bit, I would not worry, the 5.4 is good, the brakes are good, you just might have to drive in 3rd gear on the freeway at 55mph, and add a good tow package. good luck

Hehe...I probably need a cooler then..I have a problem with heavy foot disease as well.

You should see me in my cobra after I have spent the weekend in the expedition! Lonely roads are not safe!

Definetly get a cooler.

I'm towing #7500 with mine with no problems. Mods sure help though, I'm sure.

Well actually I'm not towing right now. I towed it 270 miles to leave it for some mods of it's own. First boat mods and it started with the big block in pieces and will end with it all back together again
